Job summary

Howmet Aerospace in Dover, New Jersey seeks a Melter Tech to join the Alloy plant on a Midnight Shift (Sun-Sun) 10:00 PM–6:30 AM. Training occurs Mon–Fri 6:00 AM–2:30 PM over several months, with pay range $24–$26 per hour and shift premiums for off-shift work.

Responsibilities

Howmet Aerospace is currently looking for a Melter Tech to join the Howmet Alloy plant in Dover, New Jersey. The work hours for this Midnight Shift are Sunday Night to Thursday Night 10:00 PM-6:30 AM. Training on (Monday–Friday 6:00 A–2:30 P) will take place over several months.

Anticipated Pay Range: $24 – $26 per hour. Pay rates within this range are determined by experience, education, certifications, etc. The position will receive an hourly shift premium while on an off‑shift.

The Melter Technician’s role is to charge, operate, maintain, and clean melting and related equipment in accordance with Vacuum Alloy Manufacturing Process documented procedures, and to perform daily operation of the vacuum furnaces.

Environmental Health & Safety Responsibilities
  • Assist in implementing Howmet Aerospace’s EHS values, policies, and principles.
  • Comply with all department, facility, corporate, and regulatory EHS regulations.
  • Wear all required personal protective equipment.
  • Report all job‑related illnesses and injuries (per employee handbook).
  • Report all safety, health, and environmental concerns to your supervisor in a timely manner.
  • Attend all EHS training.
Job Responsibilities
  • Operate the melting unit (pumps, blowers, etc.).
  • Monitor equipment operation and make adjustments as needed to ensure effectiveness.
  • Furnish laboratory preliminary requirements.
  • Document and maintain accurate records and logs.
  • Maintain a clean and orderly work environment.
  • Perform minor and preventative maintenance on equipment.
  • Install, remove, and monitor preheat torches.
  • Follow all melting techniques (Al’s, melt practices).
  • Weigh metal additions (if qualified) and verify preliminary additions are correct.
  • Perform required data entry for melt cards/​logs.
  • Assist on multiple furnaces during a workday, if required.
  • Perform coil changes, including confined space work, LTV, and operating the overhead crane to remove and install coils.
  • Execute emergency and remedial procedures that may arise during the melting process.
  • Carry out spout and entry changes.
  • Run the tube cleaner and keep the area clean.
  • Clean hot‑top molds as required.
  • Carry out any other duties assigned by the Team Leader or supervisor.
  • Assist in training new team members as needed.
  • After training, be capable of running the “A,” “B,” “C,” and W units.
  • Successfully complete Melter’s training and certification within the prescribed timeframe.
Melter Responsibilities During Furnace Changes
  • Coordinate shift‑to‑shift communication activities during furnace changes with the melt team and maintenance.
  • Record the progression of furnace changes on the furnace change sheet and report any problems to the shift team leader.
  • Pass on the status of furnace changes to the next shift melt team members and supervision.
  • Complete furnace change safety audits:
    • Confined Space
    • Fall Protection
    • Lockout/Tag‑Out/Verify
    • Respirator Inspections
  • Be accountable for the timely completion of furnace changes.
  • Ensure all furnace change supplies are placed in the assigned cabinet immediately following a furnace change.
  • Order any supplies that are not in the stockroom (breathable air, out‑of‑stock items).
Job Specifications

  • Must successfully complete Melter’s training and certification within the prescribed timeframe.
  • Communicate effectively (verbal and written); read, write, and comprehend English.
Physical Demands & Equipment Used
  • Pass a satisfactory vision exam, including Jaeger J1 at not less than 12 inches (30.5 cm) in at least one eye, natural or corrected.
  • Pass physical requirements, including use of a respirator and mobile equipment such as overhead cranes.
  • Frequent sitting and standing in a hot manufacturing environment.
  • Occasional lifting up to 25 pounds.
  • Use various large and small tools, forklift/handcart, saws, cranes, and measurement equipment.
  • Use personal protective equipment, including safety glasses, safety shoes, hardhat, hearing protection, and clothing.
Mental Requirements
  • Understand complex written instructions.
  • Perform basic mathematical calculations.
  • Operate a PC at a basic level.
