LOCATION: Mexican Heritage Plaza (1700 Alum Rock Ave, San Jose, CA 95116)

SCHEDULE: Expected to work onsite at the Mexican Heritage Plaza

JOB TYPE: Part Time, Non-Exempt (approximately 12 - 25 hours/week)

COMPENSATION: $30 - $40/hour, depending on education and experience level

POSITION OVERVIEW AND DESCRIPTION:

The School of Arts and Culture at Mexican Heritage Plaza (SOAC) is seeking a creative team player to join as a Production Technician. SOAC invites applications and nominations of candidates with the skills, characteristics, and experience described below.

The Production Technician works on a per-event basis for the Production Department. As SOAC advances its strategic plan to activate vibrant community spaces and cultural programming, the Production Technician plays a key role in working collaboratively and creatively with the rest of the Production team to deliver on client requests as documented in the event brief, technical rider, stage plots, input lists, and production notes. Applicants who have only audio OR lighting experience are welcome and will be considered on the strength of those specialties.

GENERAL RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES:

General

  • Work individually or as part of a team to move and place physical elements needed for an event, including: staging, furniture, canopies, barricades, lighting, and/or audio equipment.
  • Able to safely build, secure, and level professional stage decks and legs.
  • Understand and enforce the safety and policy requirements of the School of Arts and Culture.
  • Able to: lift 50 lbs, operate a fly system, and operate a push-around lift.

Audio

  • Able to set up a small PA system, including: two speakers, device inputs, projectors, and various microphones.
  • Assist with large event audio layouts, band setups, and sound checks as directed.
  • Troubleshoot and repair: cable, microphones, and audio equipment as directed.
  • Operate Allen & Heath QU32 and QU16 digital mixers; mix house system.
  • Move, hang, and focus fixtures; utilize gels, gobos, and other modifiers.
  • Perform preventative maintenance and organize lighting inventory as directed.
  • Troubleshoot and repair: cable, incandescent, and LED fixtures as directed.
  • Operate ETC Ion XE console, including: patching, routing, and designing; maintain theater repertory plot.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

1) Fluent in English. Conversational Spanish is preferred.

2) Strong organizational abilities, including equipment and tool management.

3) Experience engaging with diverse stakeholders.

4) Strong written and public speaking communication skills.

5) Demonstrated ability to stay on schedule while accommodating in-the-moment requests when possible.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Physical Demands: This position requires the ability to work in a fast-paced, dynamic environment, including occasional evening and weekend events and community engagement activities. The role involves physical tasks such as working at heights, climbing ladders and stairs, and operating a skylift. Candidates must be able to lift up to 50 pounds and lift 25 pounds overhead.
  • Work Environment: Hybrid work environment with regular in-person engagements at SOAC and off-site meetings with partners and stakeholders.
