Description

The Production Supervisor is responsible for managing work flow, ensuring that proper processes and procedures are followed, and that employees have the tools and information needed to successfully perform their jobs. This supervisor is expected to recommend and implement improvements to processes, equipment, and working conditions that will enhance safety, quality, and productivity. Objective performance evaluations and targeted education and training programs are key tools the Production Supervisor will use to actively manage the professional development and success of his/her team.

This job description is intended to be an overview of primary responsibilities for this position. All employees are charged with providing assistance in generally similar duties when management deems it necessary. Special projects and activities may also be created where employees’ talents can best be utilized. In addition, General Stamping & Metalworks is a growing organization responding to an ever changing market. It is expected that tasks and requirements will change from time to time and employees will be asked to respond as needed and within reason.

Organizational Relationships and Authority

The Production Supervisor reports directly to the Production Manager. Direct Reports to this position are likely to include:

  • Machine Operators
  • Material Handlers

The Production Supervisor has direct responsibility to halt operations if employee safety is a concern or equipment is not performing to original manufacturer specifications. This position works closely with Engineers, Technologists, and Manufacturing Engineers, and collaborates with the Production Scheduler, Facilities Director and Tool Room Supervisor to resolve scheduling, equipment, tooling or facilities issues.

Key Responsibilities and Purpose

The primary responsibility of the Production Supervisor is to maintain a safe, clean, and efficient work area while managing labor, equipment, tooling, and work flow in order to ensure on time completion of production schedules. Each supervisor will conduct effective team meetings at the start of shift to communicate opportunities, explain challenges, listen to feedback, remove obstacles, which will be posted daily onto Team Boards. He/she will develop employee’s skills by listening, teaching, and mentoring your team members as well as assessing skills.

To achieve success in this role, the supervisor must:

  • Directly and attentively supervise Production Leads, Machine Operators, and Material Handlers
  • Ensure that all employees have the necessary tools and training to maximize their productivity in collaboration with the Production Lead and the Training and Development Manager
  • Plan and requisition, interview & select labor in collaboration with the Production Manager to ensure appropriate staffing levels to meet production requirements
  • Effectively organize jobs per the production schedule ensuring all jobs are completed on time, and in order of due date.
  • Clearly identify and safely store all raw material inventories and tools and fixtures in a manner which affords easy access and minimizes waste
  • Maintain 85% or greater productivity level for the department
  • Communicate management directives and company information to employees
  • Collaborate with the appropriate technician when equipment is not performing to optimal standards
  • Troubleshoot issues and inform Tool Room Supervisor of your findings
  • Recommend equipment purchases to improve or expand capabilities of the department
  • Collaborate with Engineers, Technologists, Manufacturing Engineers, Production Manager, and Tool Room Supervisor on new projects or process improvements
  • Utilize ERP system to modify jobs, reconcile inventories, review production schedules, and maintain inventory locations
  • Inform the Supply Chain Manager of non-conforming material or issues with supplier documentation
  • Communicate and maintain the safety, quality, and cleanliness standards set for the department
  • Ensure preventative maintenance schedules are followed on all welding and department equipment
  • Create work orders when equipment is not performing safely or optimally
  • Recommend and participate in continuous improvement initiatives
  • Complete thorough accident investigations when necessary
  • Utilize the established process for weld fixture maintenance and ensure the process is sustained
Job Demands and Expectations

This position requires the Production Supervisor to maintain a healthy relationship between his/her subordinates to ensure an objective view is always maintained and organizational goals are not compromised. In addition, the Production Supervisor will understand the personal goals and developmental opportunities for his/her subordinates.

The Production Supervisor is expected to update job knowledge on an ongoing basis by identifying and participating in related educational opportunities, reading professional publications, reporting key learning’s to the management team, maintaining personal networks to the benefit of the company, and participating in professional organizations where indicated or requested.

All supervisors are required to complete and maintain First Responder training, enabling the management team to respond to emergency situations in an appropriate, calm, and systematic manner.

Qualifications and Competencies

To perform this job successfully, an individual must demonstrate excellent communication skills and consistently follow up on assigned projects to ensure completion.

Education

Experience

Minimum of 2 years of supervising experience in metal fabrication operations, stamping or press break processes preferred, but not an absolute requirement.

  • Blueprint Reading with welding symbols
