Position Summary
The Production Supervisor (aka Supervisor) is responsible for directing and coordinating daily production activities during assigned shifts within a food processing facility. This role oversees frontline employees to ensure safe, efficient, and compliant manufacturing operations that meet production schedules and quality standards.
The Production Supervisor ensures adherence to FSMA (21 CFR Part 117) preventive controls, applicable FDA and/or USDA regulations, and supports the facility’s SQF certified Food Safety and Quality Management System.
This position reinforces food safety compliance and operational controls but does not override the authority of Food Safety & Quality Assurance (FSQA) personnel regarding product disposition, hold/release decisions, or food safety corrective actions. Shift Production Oversight
- Supervise production employees during assigned shift
- Ensure production schedules are executed according to plan
- Monitor line performance, yields, and downtime
- Adjust labor and workflow to maintain efficiency and safety
- Conduct routine line checks and floor presence throughout shift
Food Safety & Quality Compliance
- Enforce GMPs, hygiene practices, and plant sanitation standards
- Ensure compliance with allergen controls and changeover procedures
- Verify production documentation (batch records, check sheets, traceability logs) is complete and accurate
- Monitor critical process parameters as assigned
- Immediately elevate food safety or quality concerns to FSQA
- Support internal audits, third-party audits, and regulatory inspections
OSHA & Workplace Safety Compliance
- Enforce company safety policies and OSHA standards
- Ensure team adherence to:
- Lockout/Tagout (29 CFR 1910.147) procedures
- Machine guarding requirements
- Powered industrial truck safety rules
- Hazard communication standards
- Confined space awareness requirements
- Report and document safety incidents and near misses
- Promote safe behaviors and proactive hazard identification
Employee Supervision & Development
- Provide training, coaching, and performance feedback to employees
- Conduct shift meetings and communicate expectations
- Monitor attendance and enforce company policies
- Coordinate corrective actions in partnership with HR
- Support onboarding and cross-training efforts
Production Documentation & Reporting
- Complete production reports, downtime logs, and shift summaries
- Ensure accurate documentation of material usage and product traceability
- Communicate shift performance and issues to management
- Support recall readiness and mock recall activities
Equipment & Operational Coordination
- Coordinate with Maintenance for equipment issues and repairs
- Support preventive maintenance scheduling as needed
- Ensure equipment is returned to production in sanitary and operational condition
Attendance & Coverage
- Maintain regular and predictable attendance
- Provide leadership presence for the duration of assigned shift
- Support shift coverage during peak production periods or absences
Marginal (Non-Essential) Functions
- Assist in new product trials
- Participate in continuous improvement initiatives
- Support special projects as assigned
Required Qualifications
- High school diploma or GED (Associate degree preferred)
- Supervisory experience in manufacturing or production environment
- Knowledge of GMPs and food safety fundamentals
- Strong communication and organizational skills
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience in SQF certified facilities
- Familiarity with FSMA preventive controls requirements
- Experience in FDA and/or USDA regulated environments
- Lean manufacturing exposure
Physical Demands (ADA-Compliant)
- Ability to stand and walk production floors for extended periods
- Ability to lift up to 40 pounds with or without reasonable accommodation
- Ability to access all production areas
- Ability to work in varying temperature environments
Work Environment
- Food processing and packaging environment
- Exposure to moving machinery, temperature variation, allergens, and sanitation chemicals
- PPE required including hair restraints, safety footwear, gloves, and hearing protection
