About the Position
This position supports the production of SSAB steel by performing tasks to facilitate the preparation and testing of steel samples for verification of conformance to customer specifications. The role follows standard operating procedures and promotes safe work habits to ensure production is efficient and safe. It requires hands‑on operational work, maintenance duties, and administrative responsibilities in the laboratory. The candidate must cross‑train and become competent in all laboratory assignments and work rotating swing shifts.
Main Responsibilities
- Learn and follow standard operating procedures and safe operating practices (JSA/SOP)
- Operate testing equipment (tensile, charpy, bend)
- Operate machine equipment (CNC machine centers)
- Operate sample preparation equipment (vertical, horizontal band saws)
- Prepare and analyze all steel samples using lab equipment
- Accurately report testing information in a timely manner
- Receive test coupons, prepare test specimens, perform required tests
- Verify, document, and enter data into forms, tracking systems, and spreadsheets
- Perform routine preventative maintenance on equipment, including validation checks
- Troubleshoot to assist in returning faulty equipment to operational status
- Maintain regular and reliable attendance
Education, Experience, and Competencies
- High school diploma or equivalent GED or HSE
- Experience with computers (basic operation and/or troubleshooting)
- Detail oriented (accuracy)
- Ability to work in a team environment
- Ability to perform multiple tasks simultaneously
- Ability to handle fast pace with low margin for error
- Good verbal and written communication skills
- Ability to interpret industry specifications (ASTM/EN/API/ABS/CSA)
Preferred Experience
- Previous applied technology experience with CNC machining, cutting, and milling equipment
- Associate's or Bachelor's degree with a science major, such as chemistry
Work Environment And Physical Demands
- Sit, walk, stand – alternating throughout a 12‑hour shift
- Reach and twist at waist/desk level
- Use both hands for handling, grasping, fingering, gripping, and feeling textures and temperatures
- Lift and move up to 10 pounds
- Perform repetitive tasks for extended periods
The Employee Will Occasionally Be Required To
- Lift and/or move up to 50 pounds
- Reach above shoulder level and below waist level
- Balance, stoop, kneel or crouch, and climb stairs

Position Type - Work Hours - Travel Requirements
- Position is full time, hourly, and is eligible for overtime
- Position works 12 hours a day, rotating swing shifts to include both days, nights, and weekends
- Onsite presence required
