Job description

Regular Schedule: 39 hours per week

A Non-Merit vacancy exists in the Department of Public Works, Bureau of Solid Waste Management.

Non-Merit positions are not classified within the Baltimore County Government Classification and Compensation Plan.

A list of eligible applicants will be established based on the examination as outlined below.

Current and future vacancies occurring in any Office or Department of Baltimore County General Government may be filled from the list of eligible applicants.

Under the guidance of senior maintenance staff, perform general maintenance and repair to single stream system.

Example of Essential Duties

  • Operates and makes miscellaneous minor repairs and adjustments to single stream system components.
  • Maintains, lubricates, and adjusts machinery and equipment.
  • Replaces units or parts, such as gears, bearings and filters.
  • Tests newly installed and pre-existing mechanical equipment.
  • Assists with major or complex maintenance, repair, and installation projects.
  • Prepares and keeps records of work performed and materials and equipment used or needed.
  • Performs various manual labor tasks.

EXAMPLES OF OTHER DUTIES

  • Assists managers in training staff in proper equipment maintenance techniques.
  • May operate an automobile or light truck to transport workers, tolls, and equipment between job sites.
  • Performs other related duties as required.

Possession of a valid driver's license equivalent to a non-commercial, class C Maryland driver's license.

PLUS

Two years' experience in maintenance work.

(Training related to single stream system operation and maintenance may be substituted on a year-for-year basis for the required experience.)

  • Knowledge of the tools, equipment, and methods of mechanical maintenance.
  • Basic knowledge of the operation and maintenance of production machinery.
  • Ability to operate tools and equipment used in mechanical maintenance.

  • Skill in the use of tools and equipment.
  • Skill in performing minor repairs and adjustments to buildings and stationary building equipment and systems.
  • Ability to apply acquired knowledge to increasingly varied and complex tasks.
  • Ability to perform duties independently and as part of a team.
  • Ability to train on equipment of higher complexity.
  • Ability to lead and instruct others.
  • Ability to complete assigned tasks by established deadlines.
  • Ability to complete simple forms.

Licenses and Certificates

  • Possession of a valid license equivalent to a non-commercial, class C Maryland driver's license is required at the time of appointment.
  • Possession of, or ability to obtain, and maintain forklift certification.
  • Possession of, or ability to obtain, and maintain, a Certified DOT certification.

All licenses and certificates must be maintained throughout employment.

Employees in this classification are designated as Emergency/Essential and may be required to work overtime with little or no advance notice.

Physical and Environmental Conditions

The work of this classification entails the performance of heavy physical labor including climbing, bending, stooping, lifting and carrying heavy objects, and the operation of vehicles, tools, and equipment. This position requires the agility to frequently go up and down stairs and climb on and off of equipment. Ability to lift up to 50 lbs. Some work requires exposure to potentially hazardous conditions such as exposure to heat, cold, rain, snow, mud, ice, and airborne particles including dust.

Medical Examination and Employment Background Investigation

Applicants selected for employment with Baltimore County must successfully complete a physical examination, drug screening and employment investigation, including, but not limited to a criminal background, education certification and fingerprint checks.
