Job Description

The Maryland National Capital Park & Planning Commission, with over 5,000 employees, manages more than 52,000 acres of parks and recreational areas across Montgomery and Prince George’s counties. The Department of Parks & Recreation oversees planning, supervising, and coordinating facilities and services. The Facility Services Division (FSD), the largest within the department, includes Fleet Management, Buildings & Structures, Horticulture & Forestry, Major Maintenance & Inspection, Critical Projects, and Administrative sections.

This position is based in the Fleet Management section in Upper Marlboro, Maryland. It involves performing skilled mechanic work, maintaining and repairing vehicles, and assisting on major projects. Work is supervised by Lead and Senior Mechanics and may include guiding Trades Trainees and Maintenance Workers.

Key Duties
  • Receive and execute work orders for mechanical projects.
  • Test drive, inspect, and repair vehicle defects.
  • Assist senior mechanics with diagnosing repairs.
  • Perform routine maintenance like oil changes, tire rotations, brake and engine tune-ups.
  • Make minor repairs and refer major repairs to senior staff.
  • Maintain records of work and expenditures.
  • Transport tools, equipment, and personnel as needed.
  • Set up and operate equipment safely.
  • Tow vehicles for repairs and load/unload supplies.
  • Provide general maintenance for equipment.

Work hours are from 6:30 am to 3:15 pm. The salary range is $47,419 - $83,983 annually.

Minimum Qualifications
  • High school diploma or GED.
  • Completion of an approved automotive mechanic apprenticeship or four years of responsible mechanical experience.
  • Valid driver’s license; CDL with endorsements required within 12 months.
  • Pass medical examination.
