Job summary

Schuff Steel seeks a Production Helper in Ottawa, KS to assist in fabrication of structural metal products. You will lift, move and prep materials, support welding and assembly, keep work area clean, and help operators with routine tasks on a busy shop floor.

Ideal candidates have a high school diploma or GED and at least 1 year of experience, with ability to read safety rules and operate basic tools while following PPE protocols. This role offers a competitive compensation and health benefits.

Qualifications

• Must read and interpret safety rules, operating instructions and procedure manuals.
• Ability to add, subtract, multiply and divide in all units of measure.
• Basic reasoning to carry out written or diagrammed instructions.

Responsibilities

• Lifts, positions, and removes workpieces to assist fitting and welding.
• Loads, stacks, and transports stock, tools, dies, and WIP by hand or cart.
• Cleans and prepares metal for fabrication, welding, painting, or shipping.
• Cleans work areas, machines, tools and equipment; handles scrap as needed.
• Performs routine duties and assists fellow employees as directed.
• Passes tacking tests on Flat, Horizontal, Vertical and Overhead positions.
• Adheres to all safety rules and PPE requirements.

Core Responsibilities

• Lifts, positions, and removes workpieces from machines to assist in fitting and welding.
• Loads, stacks, and transports stock, tools, dies, and work in process by hand or truck.
• Cleans and scrapes metal preparatory to fabricating, welding, painting, or shipping.
• Picks up and trucks scrap from work areas.
• Cleans work area, machines, tools, and equipment.
• Perform other routine duties.
• Assist fellow employees as directed.
• Pass the tacking test on the following positions: Flat, Horizontal, Vertical and Overhead.
• Must adhere to and follow all safety rules and PPE requirements

Education/Training - Work Experience

High school diploma or general education degree (GED), and/or 12 months experience

Specialized Knowledge - Certificates & Licenses

• Equipment Knowledge & Skills – Equipment generally used includes but is not limited to overhead cranes, forklifts and hand grinders.
• Language Skills: Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.
• Mathematical Skills: Ability to add, subtract, multiply and divide in all units of measure.
• Reasoning Ability: Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form. Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.
