Full Time: Year-Round, 40 Hours/Week

Wage Range: $55,000-$65,000 a year

Department: Horticulture

Reports to: Director of Horticulture

The Role:

Green City Growers, or GCG, is growing and needs a Production Farm Manager to oversee and manage new Production Farmers for multiple small-scale production farms around New England. This position is year-round and full time and involves both hands-on farming tasks as well as leadership duties, including guiding a team of urban farmers and ensuring the efficiency and productivity of the farms. The role requires a strong understanding of annual vegetable production, leading farmers across multiple sites, balancing efficiency and quality, and is excited to take the best of large-scale agricultural practices and apply them to small-scale farms.

JOB REQUIREMENTS
  • Leadership and Staff Training: Help on-board farmers in late March in GCG farming practices, and maintain training throughout the season in November. Improve the systems we use to train farmers and encourage to think about continual improvements in all areas of the job, including crop planning and customer success.
  • Staff Management: Under the direction of the Horticulture Director, directly manage assigned production farmers, ensuring GCG standards are met. Manage farmers to maximize efficiency and work with clients to develop and implement seasonal crop plans and yield estimates, improving productivity and crop quality. This job is highly supported by a team of professionals with domain expertise to ensure the best possible experience and highest quality crops for employees and customers. Monitor performance at sites (from a horticultural and customer success standpoint) and provide feedback to farmers to promote their efficiency and quality of on-site work, while motivating them and developing their professional growth.
  • Farm Support: Join farming staff onsite to work with farmers daily during the season (training and coaching need to be done in person) and fill in hands on with farm work as needed. Move quickly, with a sense of urgency, to model best practices.
  • Continuous Improvement: Is excited to change and grow and explore new best practices under the guidance of the Horticulture Director.
  • Customer Success: Build and maintain relationships with customers and partners. Support farmers in leading periodic programs and tours.
  • Record Keeping and Reporting: Check direct reports’ record keeping and ensure that visits are documented properly. Audit documentation by farmers to ensure appropriate record keeping.
Ideal Qualifications
  • The ideal candidate will be a self-starter who will work independently using skills gained from in-house training, possess excellent communication skills, a positive attitude, and maintain a keen sense of personal responsibility. Detail-oriented, with a commitment to high quality work and continuous improvement.
  • Previous experience in a leadership or supervisory role.
  • At least 3 years of farming experience.
  • Ability to work a schedule that is based on site needs (potential for early mornings, long days).
  • Ability to perform physically challenging work in all weather conditions. Ability to move up to 50 lbs. on a regular basis.
  • Requires daily driving in a company vehicle, up to 3 hours or more, during the season. Driver’s license and good driving record required. Following a conditional offer of employment, GCG may require a motor vehicle record check on all final candidates.
  • A background check may be required.
  • Medical, dental, vision, life insurance for employees, spouses and children.
  • 401(k) retirement plan with 5% employer matching contribution.
  • Employee Stock Ownership Plan (ESOP)
  • Discretionary Bonus
