Job Description

Production Engineer - Decatur Corn Plant, Decatur, IL

This is an exempt level position.

Job Summary:

Responsible for supervising and leading the day-to-day operations of the department, supporting Performance Excellence activities, and managing administrative functions. The role involves process improvements across production facets, project development from conception to start-up, and supporting daily operations, cost tracking, quality, and mentoring colleagues. The Production Engineer will indirectly lead up to 12 hourly colleagues and support scheduling, training, and SOP updates, possibly working with contractors on projects.

Essential Job Functions:
  1. Oversee specific processes and manage projects including procurement, equipment installation, budgeting, employee training, and startup.
  2. Lead plant safety initiatives, including Process Safety Management (PSM).
  3. Recommend improvements for facilities, equipment, and safety programs.
  4. Engage with shift supervision to achieve operational results and employee development.
  5. Review operational and quality reports daily.
  6. Support Quality and Food Safety Management Systems, possibly as a team member.
  7. Serve as a primary contact for operational planning and guidance.
  8. Assist with daily operations and shift coverage as needed.
  9. Design, develop, and manage operational projects.
  10. Track processes and costs.
  11. Participate in employee performance management, including mentorship and discipline.
  12. Provide feedback and support to operators and engineers to meet department KPIs and continuous improvement goals.
Job Requirements:
  • B.S. in Engineering preferred or equivalent experience.
  • 5+ years of plant operations experience preferred.
  • 5+ years supervisory experience preferred; union supervisory experience is a plus.
  • Project management experience is helpful.
  • Focus on Quality and Safety.
  • Proven leadership and problem-solving skills.
  • Strong communication skills.
  • Ability to lead personnel and collaborate with corporate departments.
  • Ability to anticipate challenges and develop solutions.
Working Conditions:
  • Exposure to dust, chemicals, irritants, and noise levels exceeding 85 decibels.
  • Temperature variations from over 100°F to below freezing, with potential inclement weather.
Physical Requirements:
  • Lift and transport materials up to 55 pounds.
  • Traverse distances up to two miles daily.
  • Operate equipment at various heights, including work on ladders or scaffolding.
