Job summary

Epiroc in Garland, Texas is seeking a Product Quality Improvement Specialist to support the commissioning of new drilling equipment and ensure top product quality. You will assist with mechanical/electrical setup, calibrate drilling parameters, and troubleshoot startup issues to meet safety standards before handover.

The role requires 50% or more travel to customer sites worldwide and ownership of the zero-defect and warranty feedback loop.

Qualifications

  • 5+ years of experience operating or commissioning heavy drilling rigs or industrial drill equipment.
  • Strong knowledge of QC tools: FMEA, PPAP, APQP, MSA.
  • Ability to troubleshoot mechanical and electrical issues under pressure.
  • Proficient in reading technical drawings and schematics.

Responsibilities

  • Machine setup, alignment, and mechanical setup of drill rig per specs.
  • Assist with pre-start checks and energized testing of motors and PLCs.
  • Support trial runs and hot runs to verify performance under load.
  • Troubleshoot mechanical, hydraulic, pneumatic, or electrical issues during startup.
  • Document test results, drilling data, and commissioning dossiers.
  • Ensure operators follow standardized work Instructions and tooling procedures.
  • Develop and implement quality control systems and testing frameworks.
  • Lead cross-functional teams using 8D, 5 Whys, Ishikawa, FMEA.
  • Ensure processes comply with ISO 9001 and customer requirements.

Join Our Team as a Product Quality Improvement Specialist at Epiroc!

Product Quality Improvement Specialist is a highly skilled subject matter expert responsible for supporting the safe and efficient commissioning of new drilling equipment and ensuring the highest standards of product quality. This role involves assisting with the mechanical and electrical setup, calibrating drilling parameters, troubleshooting startup issues, and conducting functional testing to ensure the machinery meets all design specifications and safety standards before full-time operation handover. This dual role commissioning the drilling equipment, reporting out defects and issues and is involved in analyzing product defects, implementing root cause corrective actions (CAPA), and directly training operators on advanced drilling techniques, tooling, and strict adherence to manufacturing procedures to reduce waste and ensure first-pass approval.

The expectation for this role is to liaison between the PC and the CC. This role would require 50% or more traveling to various customer locations globally and supporting start-ups/commissioning. The key strategy for this role is to take ownership of the 500-hour zero-defect and warranty related issues and close the Field-to-Product Company feedback loop.

Responsibilities:
  • Machine Setup and Calibration: Support the installation, alignment, and mechanical setup of the drill rig and associated machinery according to engineering blueprints and specifications.
  • Commissioning/Startup Execution: Support and assist with pre-start checks, including static checks (lube priming, hand rotation) and energized testing (functional testing of motors, pumps, and PLC controls).
  • Operational Validation: Support trial runs and \"hot runs\" to verify machinery performance under load, monitoring drilling parameters like speed, feed rate, torque, and pressure.
  • Troubleshooting: Support and assist to identify and resolve mechanical, hydraulic, pneumatic, or electrical issues during startup, performing minor repairs or adjustments as needed.
  • Documentation and Reporting: Document all test results, record drilling data, and maintain accurate records for commissioning dossiers and provide copies to operator team and production quality team.
  • Process Discipline: Support and provide assistance as the \"guardian\" of precision, ensuring operators follow standardized work instructions (SWI) and proper manual of arms (tooling) for precision drilling processes.
  • Quality Assurance: Develop and implement quality control systems, inspection procedures, and testing frameworks to evaluate product reliability.
  • Root Cause Analysis: Lead cross-functional teams using structured problem-solving tools (8D, 5 Whys, Ishikawa, FMEA) to investigate defects and implement permanent corrective actions.
  • Technical Compliance: Ensure production processes adhere to quality standards (ISO 9001) and customer-specific requirements.
Knowledge:
  • Experience: 5+ years of experience operating and commissioning heavy drilling rigs or industrial drill presses.
  • Strong knowledge of QC tools: FMEA, PPAP, APQP, MSA.
  • Technical Knowledge: Strong understanding of mechanical, hydraulic, and electrical systems in drilling operations.
  • Troubleshooting Skills: Demonstrated ability to troubleshoot mechanical and electrical issues under pressure.
  • Blueprint Reading: Proficiency in reading and interpreting technical drawings, blueprints, and Process and Instrumentation Diagrams (P&IDs).
  • Safety Mindset: Strict adherence to safety protocols, including Lockout/Tagout (LOTO) procedures.
  • Communication: Strong verbal and written communication skills to report to project management and train operators
Formal Education Requirement:

Bachelor’s Degree, Preferred

Duties are generally performed in a professional office environment that involves walking, stairs, extended periods of sitting, frequent use of computer screens, which may result in eye strain or fatigue—and the occasional need to lift up to 15 pounds.
