Position Overview
The Product Engineer is responsible for supporting new product initiatives from the initial customer inquiry through design validation and production launch. This role partners closely with customers, manufacturing, suppliers, and cross-functional teams to develop innovative, manufacturable, and cost-effective solutions that meet quality, performance, and regulatory requirements.
The ideal candidate is a technically driven engineer with experience in product development, strong communication skills, and a customer-focused approach within a manufacturing or automotive environment.
Primary Responsibilities
Customer & Project Support
- Serve as the technical point of contact for assigned customer programs throughout the product development lifecycle.
- Build productive relationships with customer engineering teams while understanding project goals, technical requirements, and future business opportunities.
- Collaborate with internal departments to ensure customer expectations are effectively communicated and executed.
- Support commercial teams by providing technical guidance during quotation and program planning activities.
- Evaluate new product opportunities to determine technical and manufacturing feasibility.
- Recommend appropriate materials, manufacturing methods, and production strategies for new applications.
- Develop engineering concepts that balance performance, quality, and cost objectives.
- Participate in product design reviews and recommend improvements to enhance manufacturability and efficiency.
- Prepare functional specifications and maintain engineering documentation throughout development.
Cost & Manufacturing Analysis
- Assist in preparing cost estimates by defining engineering assumptions and manufacturing requirements.
- Analyze product designs for manufacturability, tolerance capability, production capacity, and environmental considerations.
- Support continuous cost reduction initiatives through design and process improvements.
- Perform engineering calculations and feasibility analyses to support project decisions.
Prototype & Launch Activities
- Coordinate prototype builds and off-tool production activities.
- Support prototype testing, validation, and documentation of results.
- Develop work instructions and manufacturing documentation for prototype and pre-production parts.
- Assist in defining packaging, labeling, and handling requirements for new products.
- Participate in equipment launch activities and production readiness reviews.
Supplier & Cross-Functional Collaboration
- Work with Purchasing and Supplier Quality to identify and evaluate suppliers for outsourced components or services.
- Coordinate engineering activities across manufacturing, quality, supply chain, and customer teams.
- Support project kick-off meetings and provide technical leadership throughout program execution.
Quality & Continuous Improvement
- Contribute to Advanced Product Quality Planning (APQP) activities throughout product development.
- Support PPAP submissions and documentation for customer approvals.
- Utilize Automotive Core Tools, including PFMEA, MSA, SPC, and Control Plans, to ensure product quality and process capability.
- Identify technical risks and participate in developing corrective and preventive actions.
- Promote continuous improvement initiatives that enhance product quality, engineering processes, and operational efficiency.
- Support compliance with safety, environmental, and quality standards across development activities.
Qualifications
Education
- Bachelor's degree in Engineering or a closely related technical discipline is required.
- Degrees in Mechanical, Manufacturing, Industrial, Materials, or Production Engineering are preferred.
Experience
- Previous experience in Product Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, Process Engineering, or a related engineering role.
- Experience within the automotive or industrial manufacturing sector is highly desirable.
- Familiarity with new product development and production launch processes.
Technical Knowledge
- Understanding of manufacturing processes, engineering materials, and product design principles.
- Experience evaluating manufacturability, process capability, and production feasibility.
- Working knowledge of engineering drawings, GD&T, specifications, and tolerance analysis.
- Experience with engineering cost analysis and product optimization techniques.
- Familiarity with Automotive Core Tools, including:
- APQP
- PPAP
- PFMEA
- MSA
- SPC
- Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills with the ability to work effectively across multiple departments.
