Job summary

Western States Equipment Co. is seeking a skilled heavy equipment technician dedicated to safety and quality service. The role involves preventive maintenance, diagnostics, and repair across engines, hydraulics, electrical, and powertrain systems.

Ideal candidates bring 1–5 years of field service or heavy equipment experience, strong problem-solving skills, and willingness to travel up to 80% with overtime when needed.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED required.
  • Associate degree preferred.
  • Minimum 1 year heavy equipment maintenance experience required; Caterpillar experience preferred.
  • Minimum 1 year Field Service experience preferred.
  • Minimum 5 years’ experience in heavy equipment diagnosis and repair.

Responsibilities

  • Perform heavy equipment maintenance and repairs following safety policies.
  • Develop basic troubleshooting skills under supervision.
  • Assist with repairs and diagnosing machine failures.
  • Independently perform engine preventive maintenance and inspections.
  • Inspect and repair external engine components and powertrain duties.
  • Install, repair, and service telematics systems on equipment.
  • Write clear service reports for files and warranty purposes.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

Diagnosis, Troubleshooting, and Repair

Electrical, Hydraulics, HVAC, and Cab
  • Understandsbasicelectricalcomponentswiththeabilitytotest,repair,andreplacecircuits.IncludesDeutschandAmpseal

Connectors,6/12/24batteryvoltagesystems,andabilitytorepair/replacevariousharnesstypes.

  • Independentlyperformsbasichydraulicsystemsmaintenance,includingfluidandfilterreplacement,fullsystemcleanout,

adjustingreliefvalvepressures,andpumpflows.

  • TroubleshootsandservicesHVACsystems,includingevacuating,recharging,andreplacingcomponentswhenrequired.
  • Basicunderstandingofgeneralmechanical/electricalcabfunctionspertainingtooperatorinterfaces.
Undercarriage
  • UndersupervisionofJourneymanorMasterleveltechnicianperformsgeneraltasksintroubleshootingandrepairofvarious

frameandsuspensionsystems,includingtracks,trackpads,drivesprockets,andidlers.

  • Identifiesundercarriagecomponentsandperformstracksagmeasurements.
Telematics Installations and Repairs
  • Install, repair, and activate telematics systems on equipment to enhance tracking and performance metrics.

DevelopmentPlan(TCDP).

  • Utilizesservicemanuals(STW,SIS,andpartsbooks)toaddresstechnicalissuesandperformallrequiredtaskswithin

technicianlevelabilities,inaccordancewithprintedprocedures.

  • Developsfamiliaritywithpartsreusabilityguidelines.
  • Writesandreadscomplete,factualservicereportsforfilesandwarrantypurposesusingSTWfortimelyworkorderclosing.
  • Developsskillsetstoaddressallinquiriesinapromptandfriendlymannertomeetorexceedinternal/externalclient
  • Performsotherdutiesasassignedwhiledevelopingamindsetfortechnicianproductivity.
SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE, AND ABILITIES:
  • Exceptionalcustomerserviceandadvancedcommunicationskills.
  • Abilitytoworkautonomouslyunderpressurewithexcellentproblem-solvingskills.
  • Proficiencywithsoftwareprograms(ET,STW,PartsIntegration,SISWeb).
  • Willingnesstotravelextensively(upto80%)andworkovertimeasnecessary.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
  • HighschooldiplomaorGEDrequired, Associatedegreefromanaccreditedvocationalschool preferred.
  • Minimum of oneyearofheavyequipmentmaintenanceexperiencerequired;Caterpillarexperiencepreferred.
  • Minimum of oneyearofFieldServiceexperiencepreferred.
  • Minimum of fiveyears’experienceinheavyequipmentdiagnosisandrepair.
  • ValidCDLwithacleandrivingrecordandDOTcompliance.
PHYSICAL CHARACTERISTICS:
  • Ability to stand for long periods of time along with walking, sitting, repetitively climbing stairs, reaching (including but not limited to above-shoulder reaching), repetitive bending, stooping, pushing, pulling, leaning and twisting.
  • Ability to generate 97 ft./lbs. of force, by pushing and pulling.
  • Ability to repeatedly lift up to 60lbs from the ground and place on a shelf/platform set up to 65 inches off the ground.
  • Ability to carry up to 20 lbs. while repeatedly ascend/descend a minimum of ten, 8” stair steps.
  • Ability to repeatedly ascend/descend a minimum of 10 rungs on various ladders.
  • Ability to assemble/disassemble various sizes of nuts and bolts, while repeatedly bending, stooping, squatting, kneeling, and/or crouching.
  • Exposure to extreme temperatures and environment.
  • Must be able to meet all safety requirements for applicable safety policies.
