Job summary

Qualifications

  • Knowledge of metal castings and processes: Resin sand, Green sand, Vacuum Sand, Investment, Die casting.
  • Proficient in print reading and interpretation for quoting, part design, and inspection.
  • GD&T knowledge and gage design.
  • Knowledge of AIAG standards (PFD, FMEA, Control Plans, APQP).
  • Ability to travel (North America and overseas) up to 25%.

Responsibilities

  • Ensure all aspects of product conformance during development, from RFQ review to qualification and approval.
  • Provide technical input during reviews of customer designs and RFQ packages.
  • Interact with customers to understand requirements and verify compliance during RFQ, development, and PPAP.
  • Lead PPAP submissions and resolve discrepancies with supply chain.
  • Provide technical leadership in change management (ECN, PCR).
  • Serve as primary technical contact for customers and supply chain.

Position Summary

The Product Engineer is responsible for ensuring accurate technical requirements are identified for quoting and that conforming products are sourced, developed, and qualified to the customer’s requirements. This cradle-to-grave engineering position incorporates elements from several disciplines: manufacturing engineering (casting, forging, machining, painting, plating, heat treatment), engineering design, quality engineering, and metallurgical & materials engineering. This position reports directly to the VP of Engineering and supports EQI’s global teams.

Essential Functions

  • Primary responsibility is to ensure all aspects of product conformance during the product development cycle, from RFQ technical review, development kickoff review, development, and qualification & approval, including all dimensional, material, metallurgical, and finish requirements.
  • Technical ownership throughout the lifecycle of a product to address any production issue, part quality, design concerns, or other actions inherent to the technical aspects of the product. Collects and analyzes relevant data and effectively communicates the issues and solutions to EQI teams, the customer, and the supplier as required. Able to support this function with minimal oversight, including independent customer or supplier visits as required.
  • Provides technical input during reviews of customer designs and RFQ packages – including review of material specifications, GD&T, manufacturability, cleaning, surface coating, and packaging. The PE will leverage their experience and provide valuable input to improve the overall design of products for manufacturability, cost effectiveness, strength, and durability.
  • Understands customer quality requirements and effectively communicates them to the EQI global supply chain. The Product Engineer will leverage their experience to advise on technically accurate and comprehensive work instructions and communicate effectively with the supply chain to avoid any misunderstanding of the requirements.
  • Interacts directly with the customer to understand and clarify product requirements and verify compliance to satisfy customer requirements during RFQ, development, and APQP PPAP process. Able to support this function with minimal oversight or supervision, including independent customer visits for this purpose.
  • Develops relationships with customer Engineering groups and represents EQI’s interests in a variety of functions – sales, engineering, quality, and customer service.
  • Reviews and approves PPAP submissions for new and existing products. Partners with the supply chain team to resolve PPAP discrepancies and submit approved PPAPs to the customer.
  • Provides technical leadership in change management, including ECN and Process Change Requests (PCR), to ensure product data integrity and that correct revisions are stored and used. Implements and monitors best practices in change management.
  • Responsible for both customer and supply chain support as the primary point of contact for technical issues.

Position Requirements

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering or Material Science from a four-year accredited college or university
  • 7+ years of relevant work experience
  • Knowledge of and working experience in metal castings of various processes and materials such as:
    • Processes: Resin sand / Green sand / Vacuum Sand Castings, Investment Castings, Die Castings
    • Materials: Gray Iron, Steel, Ductile Iron, Aluminum
  • Knowledge of production CNC machining, fixtures, and inspection preferred
  • Proficient in print reading and interpretation for quoting, part design, and inspection
  • Demonstrated knowledge of geometric design and tolerance (GD&T) and gage design and function
  • Knowledge of AIAG standards (PFD, FMEA, Control Plans, APQP)
  • Demonstrated ability to investigate quality problems and to apply sound technical judgment to develop possible solutions
  • Proficient oral and written communication skills
  • Able to multi-task effectively
  • Demonstrated high level of interpersonal skills to effectively lead technical discussions and facilitate solutions
  • High level of analytical ability to assess and identify appropriate alternative courses of action for definition and resolution of problems that are unique and diverse
  • Demonstrated knowledge of statistical quality tools and their application, e.g. design of experiments and Six Sigma tools and methodology is an asset
  • Familiarity with supplier quality standards, policies, and procedures
  • Ability to exercise independent judgment is required
  • Ability to effectively organize and plan
  • Ability to travel (North America and overseas) up to 10%-25% as needed.
