Position Summary

We are seeking a highly motivated Thermal Engineer to lead the characterization and modeling of a thermal control assembly consisting of embedded heaters and a liquid‑cooled plate. The primary objective is to develop a physics‑based and experimentally validated transfer function that predicts thermal performance when transitioning between two specified coolant formulations.

Job#: 3055407
Job Description:
Location

Fremont, CA (Hybrid)

Duties:

We are seeking a highly motivated Thermal Engineer to lead the characterization and modeling of a thermal control assembly consisting of embedded heaters and a liquid‑cooled plate. The primary objective is to develop a physics‑based and experimentally validated transfer function that predicts thermal performance when transitioning between two specified coolant formulations.

The successful candidate will design and execute experiments, develop analytical and computational models, correlate model predictions to measured results, and establish methodologies for predicting temperature uniformity, thermal transients, and steady‑state thermal behavior across varying operating conditions.

This role requires strong expertise in heat transfer, thermal management, instrumentation, data analysis, and engineering problem‑solving. The position involves both hands‑on laboratory work and advanced modeling activities.

Key Responsibilities
  • Characterize thermal performance including:
    • Mean operating temperature
    • Temperature uniformity
    • Spatial thermal gradients
    • Thermal transition and settling behavior
  • Design experiments to isolate and quantify key thermal parameters and mechanisms.
  • Specify and implement thermal instrumentation including thermocouples, RTDs, flow sensors, pressure sensors, and infrared cameras.
  • Evaluate the impact of coolant properties, flow conditions, thermal interfaces, and hardware tolerances on system performance.
  • Develop analytical and computational thermal models of multi‑component assemblies.
  • Develop and validate transfer functions to predict thermal performance differences between two specific coolants.
  • Correlate experimental data with simulation results and improve model accuracy.
  • Develop automated analysis tools and data processing workflows using Python or MATLAB.
  • Generate technical reports and present conclusions to engineering and management teams.
Required Qualifications
  • M.S. or Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Applied Physics, or related discipline.
  • 5+ years of experience in thermal engineering, heat transfer, or thermal management systems.
  • Strong expertise in thermal management, heat transfer, and precision thermal systems.
  • Experience developing and validating thermal models using experimental data.
  • Hands‑on experience with hardware instrumentation, thermal testing, and laboratory experimentation.
  • Proficiency with Python and/or MATLAB for data analysis and model development.
  • Strong problem‑solving and analytical skills.
  • Excellent written and verbal technical communication skills.
Desired Qualifications
Thermal Engineering and Modeling Expertise
  • Expert knowledge of fluid dynamics, rheology, and heat transfer principles, including the impact of fluid properties on cooling performance and thermal uniformity.
  • Strong experience developing hybrid physics‑based and data‑driven analytical models for dynamic systems, including system identification, state estimation, model calibration, and closed‑loop control.
  • Experience modeling heat transfer in complex assemblies containing metals, ceramics, polymers, thermal interface materials, and electronic components.
  • Familiarity with thermal interface materials, thermal contact resistance, and cooling plate design.
  • Ability to develop reduced‑order models and transfer functions from analytical and experimental data, and compare with ideal FEA results.
  • Experience with parameter estimation, regression techniques, and model calibration.
Experimental And Measurement Skills
  • Experience with precision temperature control systems and thermal uniformity optimization.
  • Experience with infrared thermography, thermocouples, RTDs, and other thermal measurement techniques.
  • Experience working with hardware test stands, data acquisition systems, and instrumentation.
  • Familiarity with heat transfer and thermal management in printed circuit board assemblies.
Software and Data Analysis
  • Advanced proficiency in Python and/or MATLAB.
  • Experience with statistical analysis and uncertainty quantification.
  • Experience automating test execution and data analysis.
Personal Attributes
  • Strong analytical thinking and scientific rigor.
  • Ability to independently define experiments and solve complex multidisciplinary problems.
  • Hands‑on, self‑driven approach with willingness to work in laboratory environments.
  • Strong collaboration skills and ability to communicate complex technical concepts clearly.
Preferred Education
  • Ph.D. strongly preferred in Mechanical Engineering, Applied Physics, Thermal Sciences, or a related field.
  • Demonstrated record of solving complex multidisciplinary thermal problems through a combination of first‑principles analysis and experimental validation.
What Success Looks Like
  • Characterize baseline thermal performance using the reference coolant.
  • Develop validated thermal models of the assembly.
  • Quantify the sensitivity of performance to coolant properties and operating conditions.
  • Create a validated transfer function between the two target coolants.
  • Demonstrate prediction accuracy against experimental results for key metrics including mean temperature, uniformity, and transient response.
