Job summary

American Honda Motor Company, Inc. is seeking a Sr. Commodity Buyer in Ohio to lead supplier strategies for complex auto parts, manage a multi-supplier base, and drive annual cost reductions.

You will work with design teams and Honda Motor Japan to optimize models and supplier performance. The role requires 2+ years in purchasing or related fields, strong negotiation skills, and the ability to manage cost and supplier relations while mentoring junior staff.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in supply chain, business or equivalent experience.
  • 2+ years in purchasing, sales, quality control, or engineering (purchasing preferred).
  • Ability to negotiate logically and manage supplier relationships.
  • Strong cost management, teamwork, problem solving and project leadership.

Responsibilities

  • Develop, gain approval, and execute purchasing model and supplier strategies for assigned commodities with 8–10 suppliers and $300M–$500M annual spend.
  • Research industry trends to inform model or supplier strategies.
  • Gain consensus on new model supplier selection across multiple developments with design and Honda Motor Japan.
  • Maintain accurate supplier selection and BOM data.
  • Build and sustain supplier relationships to drive value.
  • Establish and achieve cost targets through supplier selection and negotiation.
  • Ensure quotation processing supports timely mass production payments.
  • Lead projects supporting ACR, GML and lean initiatives; mentor entry level staff.

Job Purpose

The Sr. Commodity Buyer is responsible for the assigned auto part’s (increased complexity) piece price, investment, and annual cost reduction, all of which have significant impact on HDMA financial performance. Establishment of part and supplier strategies through understanding of the Global and North American supply base, manufacturing process and critical part design elements. Considering input from key stakeholders, propose the selection of the best cost, quality, development, and delivery supplier. Effectively manage Team level project roles.

Key Accountabilities
  • Develop, gain approval, & execute purchasing “Model and Supplier Strategies” for assigned commodities/suppliers between 8~10 suppliers with $300M ~ $500M in annual spend. Commodities/Suppliers are complex in nature
  • Research and monitor industry trends (sourcing, technology, market price) for development of Model or Supplier Strategies
  • Gain consensus on new model supplier selection, managing multiple model (13-17) developments through correlation activity with design and Honda Motor Japan
  • Responsible for accurate and timely supplier selection & BOM maintenance
  • Responsible for building supplier relationships
  • Establish and achieve logical new model cost targets through supplier selection/negotiation with Supplier, Design and Honda Motor (complex commodities)
  • Responsible for achieving annual mass production cost improvement goals (ACR), between $7M ~ $12M
  • Ensure accurate and timely quotation processing to ensure efficient payment to suppliers at Mass Production timing
  • Effectively manage projects that support business needs (ACR, GML, Diversity)
  • Create and implement continuous improvement activities to support Honda lean practices
  • Mentor and develop entry level associates

Minimum Educational Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Supply Chain or Business or equivalent experience
Minimum Experience
  • 2+ Years of relevant experience in Purchasing, Sales, Quality Control, or Engineering (Purchasing preferred)

Decisions Expected
  • Make recommendations for supplier selection for all NA regional new model launches.
  • Lead ACR strategy recommendations to support target achievement through logic, target $7M ~ $12M
  • Collaborate on part strategy consensus with design and plant on future technology direction and research.
  • Perform analysis through NSP on whether to qualify new suppliers on the basis of Q,C,D,D,M
  • Lead/influence Jikon/TMM meetings with affiliate suppliers and give support for improvement
  • Initiate continuous improvement decisions that impact the organization and support lean principles.
Working Conditions
  • International travel may be required once or twice a year with an average length of 1-2 weeks per trip (5%)
  • Willingness to work overtime due to the cyclical business needs of our NM launches.
  • Open office environment with moderate level of noise and activity.
