Position Overview

The lab technician is responsible for maintaining processing tanks and the batch treatment area in compliance with applicable policies, procedures, and regulations. The lab tech uses lab equipment to prepare reagents and solutions, troubleshoot lab and test-related problems, and review test results to ensure applicable standards are met. In addition to typical lab responsibilities, the technician is responsible for maintaining processing tanks, including the measurement of levels, pH, and other chemical composition, and for coordinating and/or performing chemical adjustments and tank cleaning in accordance with applicable safety procedures, internal work processes, and applicable city, state, and federal regulations.

This position is classified as safety-sensitive.

This role is identified as requiring ITAR (International Traffic in Arms Regulations) compliance; therefore, qualified candidates must meet the definition of a U.S. Person (per EAR Part 772 and ITAR 120.15): An individual who is granted U.S. citizenship, or An individual who is granted U.S. permanent residence (i.e., a "Green Card" holder), or An individual who is granted status as a "protected person"

  • Maintains processing tanks and batch treatment area per established procedures and regulatory standards; performs "Adds", "Decant", "Builds" and "Dumps" of processing tanks as appropriate
  • Prepares lab reagents/solutions
  • Maintains and operates lab equipment, including pipettes, burettes, TDS, and pH meters.; troubleshoots basic lab and test-related issues; ensures proper use, care, and storage of equipment
  • Performs "Adds", "Decant", "Builds" and "Dumps" of processing tanks
  • Completes accurate, timely, and legible quality records in accordance with AS9100 Quality Policy and NADCAP requirements; inputs QC data into the information management system
  • Completes regulatory and hazardous waste reporting and disposal records as required
  • Coordinates with internal/external sources for preventative maintenance schedules on all lab equipment
  • Reviews customer specifications and identifies applicable data analysis requirements, pass/fail criteria, modulus calculations, test set-up and configuration
  • Maintains quality procedures, quality assurance instructions, and process control procedures to conform to all applicable customer requirements, industry standards, and registration systems; supports and participates as needed in AS/ISO/Nadcap/customer/supplier quality audits of process and products
  • Assists in continuous improvement initiatives to enhance quality, productivity, and cost-effectiveness based on observations and experience; provides technical expertise and works with operators to identify and implement improvements to reduce waste and improve efficiency; implements lean principles, techniques, and methods as appropriate

Work Experience

  • Minimum of 1 year experience in a quality role in a manufacturing environment is required
  • Previous experience in laboratory operations is required
  • Comprehensive understanding of engineering drawings as it relates to the technical aspects of manufacturing and engineering is required; must be ableto accurately read and interpret technical drawings and specifications
  • Current/Recent HAZOPER and RCCRA certification preferred


Other Required Skills and Abilities

  • Must pass a vision color test at pre-employment and periodically thereafter
  • Must be able to pass Hazwoper and RCCRA exams within a reasonable period after hire and must maintain certifications throughout employment in role
  • Understanding manufacturing, material flow, process change, and quality processes is preferred
  • Experience in continuous improvement concepts such as Six Sigma and Leanis preferred
  • Knowledge of and experience with the requirements of AS9100

Physical Demands and Work Environment

To perform the essential functions of the role, employees must be able to perform thefollowing activities with or without reasonable accommodations:

  • Regularly stand and walk throughout the facility, stand for long periods to perform job duties
  • Regularly lift, carry (short distances), and push/pull up to 100 pounds using peer assistance and/or other lifting & material handling equipment
  • Periodically lift overhead and carry, push/pull up to 50 pounds
  • Occasionally reaches overhead and reaches out or down to perform duties
  • Frequently climb steps, stairs, or ladders
  • Occasionally bend, crawl, stoop, squat, or kneel
  • Frequently uses hand or fingers to manually inspect parts, tighten hardware & fixtures, and operate machine and material handling controls
  • Accurately distinguish colors to respond to sensors, indicators, and color-variable dashboards
  • Visual acuity to interpret readings on gauges and other measuring devices

Working Conditions
Work is performed in a lab within the manufacturing shop environment where working conditions may vary significantly; the employee will be exposed to:

  • Moderate to excessive noise (hearing protection required)
  • Extreme temperatures (occasionally)
  • Hazardous chemicals & lab equipment
  • Hazardous equipment including forklifts, hand tools, cranes or other lifting devices, and other equipment used in a machine shop environment (continually)

The use of PPE, including hearing protection, eye and hand protection, respiratory protection, and use of safety footwear may be required

Education

  • High School diploma or High School Equivalency required.
  • A bachelor’s degree in engineering, chemistry or other science is preferred.
