Process Engineer – Utilities and Environmental Control

Lilly is constructing the Lilly Medicines Foundry in Lebanon, Indiana. This is a unique opportunity to join the startup team for a greenfield site. We are hiring engineers for Utilities and Environmental Control (ECU) to support this new facility, focusing on gray and clean utilities, Tank Farm Operations, Air Emissions Systems, and Solvent Recovery Systems.

During the Project Delivery and Startup phases (2025-2028), roles will be flexible and collaborative as we support project delivery, develop systems and processes for GMP operations, and foster site culture. Resilience, creativity, and teamwork are essential as the site transitions from start-up to operational.

Responsibilities
Facility Start-Up:
  • Support the Global Facility Delivery Team with design reviews, process safety assessments, user requirements, C&Q support, unit operation shakedown, startup, and operational readiness.
  • Define and manage aspects of the operational readiness plan, including SOP development, maintenance strategy, automation, safety reviews, alarm requirements, and qualification protocols.
  • Ensure equipment is qualified and ready for operation.
  • Develop control strategies for utilities and ECU systems to support manufacturing.
  • Assist in initial operations training as the SME for equipment and areas.
Facility Operations:
  • Provide engineering support for utilities and environmental controls, applying mechanical and chemical engineering principles.
  • Monitor equipment performance and maintain qualification status.
  • Develop safety documentation for equipment.
  • Utilize mechanistic modeling and process simulation to improve understanding and control.
  • Identify and implement continuous improvement initiatives.
  • Apply root cause analysis for process and equipment issues, implementing corrective actions.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor's Degree in Mechanical or Chemical Engineering.
  • At least 3 years of experience in utility operations/engineering, including services like water for injection, boilers, chillers, glycol systems, compressed air, emission controls, waste neutralization, and solvent recovery.
Preferred Skills
  • Strong technical knowledge in mechanical or chemical engineering.
  • Analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to work independently and in teams with diverse professionals.
  • Creativity and initiative to improve processes.
  • Mentoring skills and flexibility to support 24/7 operations.

  • Initial position at Lilly Technology Center, Indianapolis; permanent role at the new Lilly Medicines Foundry in Lebanon, Indiana.
