Process Engineer – Plastics Injection Molding, Rubber Molding, and Rubber Extrusion
Process Engineer – Plastics Injection Molding, Rubber Molding, and Rubber Extrusion
Job Summary
We are seeking a highly skilled Process Engineer with expertise in plastics injection molding, rubber molding, and rubber extrusion to optimize manufacturing processes, improve product quality, and enhance operational efficiency. The ideal candidate will have hands-on experience in developing, troubleshooting, and improving processes for injection molding, rubber molding, and rubber extrusion, ensuring compliance with safety, quality, and cost objectives.
Key Responsibilities
- Design, develop, and optimize processes for plastics injection molding, rubber molding, and rubber extrusion to achieve production goals for quality, yield, and cycle time.
- Set up and validate process parameters for injection molding machines, rubber molding equipment, and rubber extrusion lines, including tooling, material selection, curing processes, and extrusion die design.
- Troubleshoot and resolve issues related to mold design, extrusion profiles, material flow, defects, and equipment performance in plastics and rubber production.
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams, including design, tooling, and quality assurance, to support new product introductions and process improvements.
- Conduct root cause analysis and implement corrective actions for process-related defects, such as flash, short shots, dimensional inconsistencies, or extrusion irregularities.
- Develop and maintain process documentation, including work instructions, process flow diagrams, and standard operating procedures (SOPs) for molding and extrusion processes.
- Select and qualify materials, including thermoplastics, thermosets, and elastomers, based on performance, cost, and application requirements for molding and extrusion.
- Drive continuous improvement initiatives using Lean, Six Sigma, or other methodologies to reduce waste, improve efficiency, and lower costs.
- Ensure compliance with industry standards, safety regulations, and environmental guidelines in all manufacturing processes.
- Support maintenance teams in maintaining and repairing injection molding, rubber molding, and rubber extrusion equipment to minimize downtime.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Materials Science, or a related field.
- 5+ years of experience as a Process Engineer in plastics injection molding, rubber molding, and/or rubber extrusion manufacturing environments.
- Strong knowledge of injection molding machines, rubber molding equipment, and rubber extrusion lines, including tooling design, die design, and processing parameters for materials such as ABS, PC, PP, TPE, and silicone rubber.
- Experience with rubber processing techniques, including compression molding, transfer molding, and rubber extrusion for profiles, seals, or hoses.
- Proficiency in troubleshooting molding and extrusion defects and optimizing processes for high-volume production.
- Familiarity with material properties, including thermoplastics, thermosets, and elastomers, and their behavior in molding and extrusion processes.
- Knowledge of Lean manufacturing, Six Sigma, or other process improvement methodologies.
- Proficiency in CAD software (e.g., SolidWorks, AutoCAD, CREO) and process simulation tools (e.g., Moldflow) is a plus.
- Strong analytical, problem-solving, and communication skills.
- Ability to work in a fast-paced, team-oriented environment.
Preferred Skills
- Experience with automation and robotics in injection molding, rubber molding, and rubber extrusion processes.
- Knowledge of quality control systems, such as ISO 9001 or IATF 16949 standards.
- Familiarity with statistical process control (SPC) and design of experiments (DOE).
- Certification in Six Sigma (Green Belt or Black Belt).
- Full-time position in a manufacturing facility.
