Job summary

CF Industries Inc. seeks a student intern/co-op in process engineering to support safe and efficient nitrogen fertilizer plant operations. Under guidance from Process Engineers, you will help monitor unit performance, analyze data, and contribute to process improvements.

You will prepare technical documents, participate in safety studies, and assist with field data collection and equipment inspections. Summer or 7–8 month assignments preferred.

Qualifications

• Must be a current college student enrolled in an ABET-accredited Chemical Engineering program.
• Previous co-op or intern experience is preferred.
• Strong written and verbal communication skills are required.
• Ability to collect field data and inspect equipment in a chemical facility.

Responsibilities

• Monitor and report on performance of process units and variables affecting plant efficiency and safety.
• Evaluate process/equipment performance to reduce upsets and resolve issues with process chemistry and equipment.
• Support process optimization through data analysis, modeling, tests, and technical input for operations.
• Prepare process engineering documents (PFDs, P&IDs, scopes of work, equipment specs) for capital projects.
• Participate in MOCs, PHAs, LPAs, and incident investigations to support process safety and EHS.
• Assist during turnarounds with pre-turnaround recommendations and equipment inspections.
• Maintain professional communication with all departments and plant personnel.

Intern/Co-op

Provides process engineering support in a collaborative environment to enhance the safe, efficient, reliable, and environmentally friendly operations of the nitrogen fertilizer plants under the guidance of Process Engineers.

Job Description

• As holistic system thinkers, monitor and report on performance of process units and key variables impacting plant efficiency, capacity, catalyst performance, emissions, and process safety.
• Proactively evaluate process and equipment performance to reduce plant upsets and generate solutions to resolve problems with process chemistry and equipment including pumps, compressors, turbines, heat exchangers, absorbers, strippers, boilers, combustion equipment, reactors, and high pressure steam systems.
• Optimize process performance through troubleshooting, process modeling, data analysis, process tests, and technical support to the operations organization.
• Complete process engineering studies and provide comprehensive process engineering support during collaborative design of new installations and processes.
• Prepare and review documents including PFDs, P&IDs, scopes of work, and equipment specifications to support the capital process.
• Participate in MOCs, PHAs, LOPA studies, and incident investigations to identify and implement process safety and other EHS solutions.
• Support Maintenance and Operations during turnarounds by providing pre-turnaround process engineering recommendations, performing equipment inspections related to process issues, assist with catalyst replacements.
• Maintain excellent communication and a professional working relationship with all departments and plant personnel.

Successful incumbents will have:

• Must be a current college student enrolled in an accredited Chemical Engineering program at an ABET-accredited institution.
• Previous co-op or intern experience is preferred.
• Strong communication skills (written and verbal) required. Must be able to effectively communicate and interact with personnel throughout the organization.
• Ability and willingness to collect field data, enter process equipment for inspections, and otherwise perform routine field engineering work in an operating chemical facility environment.
• Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite.
• Commitment to fulfill a summer internship or 7-8 month co-op assignment.
