Job description

Overview

We are seeking a full-time Process Engineerat Garmin's U.S. headquarters in the Greater Kansas City area. In this role, you will be responsible for utilizing expert CAD software skills to model complex tools and develop complex process instructions under the supervision of management or a mentor. This role may also lead small projects or sub projects for a new unit in development or a group of mature units.

Board Assembly Team:

The Board Assembly Team (BAT) is responsible for the production of Printed Circuit Boards (PCBs) for Garmin's products. The PCBs are assembled using highly automated equipment due to the complexity of certain designs and the amount of volume that is required daily.

Mechanical Assembly Team:

The Mechanical Assembly Team (MAT) is responsible for the unit level assembly and packaging of all Garmin products. Most of the units are assembled in a work cell environment by manual methods of assembly. The Process Engineer's main responsibility is to design work areas that produce the highest quality product, in the shortest amount of time, using the most economical method, while delivering a product that exceeds the customer's expectations.

Electrical Engineering Team:

The Electrical Engineering Team (EET) is responsible for the calibration and performance verification processes for Garmin products produced in the Olathe, KS facility. The units are typically calibrated and tested using automated equipment due to the quantity and complexity of the test steps. The Process Engineer's responsibility is to assemble and maintain the test equipment and procedures, while monitoring test metrics to identify opportunities to improve throughput. Process

Essential Functions
  • May perform as leader for small-to-sub projects as part of greater project, following established procedures
  • Utilizes expert CAD software skills to model complex tools
  • Develops more complex process instructions for manufacturing associates
  • Estimates level of effort for a task including calculating build times
  • Attends continuous improvement meetings and serves as member of Kaizen teams
  • Collaborates and adds value through participation in design reviews; applies design for manufacturability guidelines and provides alternative solutions as appropriate
  • Assess factory associates for certification to a process
  • Develops designed experiments for process and quality improvements
  • Analyzes processes for quality improvements and provides justification for purchases as needed
  • Demonstrates excellent communication skills with vendors that produce custom parts or equipment
  • Analyzes data to determine quality trends, finds technical root causes and implements corrective actions
  • Designs custom tooling as needed for specific applications
  • Provides reliable solutions to a variety of problems using sound problem solving techniques
  • Mentors less-experienced process engineers (Process Engineer 1)
  • Applies a sense of urgency, commitment and focus on priorities in developing solutions in a timely fashion
  • Cleanliness zone area requirements: This position requires Garmin provided personal protective equipment including SD shoes (Static Dissipative Footwear) to be always worn for an entire shift to minimize the risk of electrostatic discharge (ESD) and meet specified standards.
Electrical:
  • Researches and develops new, cutting-edge automation concepts
  • Designs, tests and validates all aspects of the electrical hardware design
  • Integrates all equipment components and I/O
  • Designs and develops basic software applications
  • Applies knowledge of production and operations processes to overall design
  • Interacts with automation design team to ensure electrical feasibility
  • Interfaces with outside teams and individuals to ensure all solutions comply with product design specifications
  • Generates revision-controlled schematics and user documentation
  • Project manages and collaborates with fellow project stakeholders
  • Conducts training for equipment operators and maintenance technicians
  • Troubleshoots, supports and continuously improves existing automated solutions
  • Works with the following:
    • Electrical panel design
    • PLC, HMI programming
    • Controls and vision systems
    • VB, VB.net, C# programming
Mechanical:
  • Researches and develops new, cutting-edge automation concepts
  • Designs, tests and validates all aspects of the mechanical design
  • Models moderately complex parts and assemblies in 3D CAD software
  • Independently determines general approach and specific solutions to technical problems
  • Applies knowledge of production and operations processes to overall design
  • Interacts with product design engineers to incorporate Design for Manufacturability principles
  • Interfaces with outside teams/individuals to ensure solutions comply with product design specifications
  • Generates revision-controlled design and user documentation
  • Project manages and collaborates with fellow project stakeholders
  • Conducts training for equipment operators and maintenance technicians
  • Troubleshoots, supports and continuously improves existing automated solutions
  • Utilizes CAD design software (AutoCAD, SOLIDWORKS)
  • Designs with fixturing, pneumatics, sensors and safety controls
  • Works with modern machining and rapid prototyping capabilities
Basic Qualifications
  • Bachelor's Degree in Mechanical, Electrical, Industrial or Computer Engineering or related field AND a minimum of 1 year of relevant work experience OR an equivalent combination of education and relevant experience
  • Excellent academics (cumulative GPA greater than or equal to 3.0 as a general rule)
  • Demonstrates full use of industry standards and procedures
  • Demonstrated proficiency and knowledge in use of engineering tools
  • Demonstrated use of Lean techniques in process development
  • Excellent problem-solving ability
  • Must be team-oriented, possess a positive attitude and work well with others
  • Demonstrated strong, clear and effective verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills
Desired Qualifications
  • Previous work or internship experience in a manufacturing environment
  • Demonstrated Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications
  • Previous experience with AS9100 and NADCAP
