Job summary

Garmin is seeking a Senior Engineering Technician at its U.S. headquarters in the Greater Kansas City area. You will build, test, troubleshoot, repair, and modify advanced development and production equipment and systems while mentoring junior staff.

You will design test fixtures, document test plans, and perform qualification activities, applying Garmin’s quality standards. This full-time role emphasizes speed, accuracy, and cross-functional collaboration.

Qualifications

  • Associate’s Degree in Electronics Technology, Electronics Engineering Technology, Mechanical Engineering Technology, or a substantially similar field, or electronics-related military training, or 80 hours towards a BS in related field, or ISCET/certification.
  • GPA at least 3.0.
  • Expert proficiency with lab equipment and test setups; able to design advanced fixtures.
  • Proficient with MS Office Word & Excel.
  • Strong verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Team-oriented with positive attitude and collaboration.
  • Ability to lift up to 50 lbs and team lift up to 100 lbs.
  • Understanding of schematic designs and test circuits (electrical role).
  • Understanding of electrical engineering/software system interactions.

Responsibilities

Job description

Overview

We are seeking a full-time Senior Engineering Technician at Garmin's U.S. headquarters in the Greater Kansas City area. In this role, you will be responsible for building, testing, troubleshooting, repairing and modifying advanced developmental and production equipment and systems.

Essential Functions
  • Recommends design improvements and changes in assembly methods to improve reliability or simplify assembly and maintenance
  • Serves as expert on lab equipment/tools, including maintaining lab test fixtures and apparatus and may design test fixture improvements using standard or automated tools (LabView, Visual Basic)
  • Writes technical reports, including documentation of the test setup and blocks diagrams to fully document test results and analysis
  • Sets up, runs and completes detailed qualification plans and reports
  • Serves as a mentor to Engineering Lab Assistants and Engineering Technicians including sharing knowledge on lab tools/processes/procedures
  • Performs moderately complex troubleshooting with minimal input
  • Documents moderately complex test plans and reports to ensure reproducibility
  • Independently manages time to ensure high quality and quantity of work completed
  • Demonstrates a sense of urgency, commitment, and focus on the right priorities in developing solutions in a timely fashion
  • Identifies and resolves problems of advanced scope using proper engineering tools and techniques
  • Independently determines general approach and specific solutions to technical problems
  • Applies Garmin’s Mission Statement, Vision, Values and Quality Policy and exhibits enthusiasm for and a desire to see Garmin succeed
Basic Qualifications
  • Associate’s Degree in Electronics Technology, Electronics Engineering, Mechanical Engineering Technology, or a substantially similar field OR electronics related Military training OR completion of a minimum of 80 hours towards a BS degree in Electronics Technology, Mechanical Engineering Technology, or substantially related field OR current ISCET certification or related certification AND a minimum of 5 years relevant experience in addition to any one of the above education options OR equivalent combination of education and relevant experience
  • Excellent academics (cumulative GPA greater than or equal to 3.0 as a general rule)
  • Must demonstrate expert proficiency using lab equipment and tools including ability to efficiently create test setups and advanced level designs
  • Demonstrates full use of design standards and procedures and advanced knowledge of product test plans and procedures
  • Proficiency working with MS Office Suite, specifically Word & Excel
  • Demonstrated strong and effective verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills
  • Must be team-oriented, possess a positive attitude and work well with others
  • Driven problem solver with proven success in solving difficult problems
  • Excellent time management and follow-up skills
  • Must possess the ability to: bend, twist and lift up to 50 lbs. and team lift up to 100 lbs. while using safe lifting techniques; push/pull test equipment on wheeled, moveable racks of up to 400 lbs.; stand for extended periods of time, climb and utilize ladders to connect cables; and walk long distances throughout the facility
  • Demonstrated understanding of advanced level schematic designs and designs of test circuits (Electrical role only)
  • Demonstrates understanding of electrical engineering/software system interactions and can differentiate between hardware and software problems (Electrical role only)
