Job summary

The Department of Juvenile Justice in Virginia is recruiting a Probation Officer I to supervise juvenile probation and parole, conduct intake, and implement interventions for behavioral change. Probation Officers will provide domestic and delinquent intake services, and juvenile probation and parole supervision. The officers will also provide effective interventions and services for competency development and accountability to promote juvenile behavioral change and public safety.

The role of Probation Officer requires extensive training throughout the first 12–18 months of employment. As part of this requirement, all newly hired Probation Officers must complete a 4-week, in person training within the first six months. Day and overnight travel are routine requirements for this position outside of training.

Minimum Qualifications
  • Knowledge and/or experience of the criminal justice system to include court proceedings
  • Knowledge of techniques to interview clients
  • Knowledge of client counseling techniques
  • Knowledge and ability to assess client needs and to develop case plans
  • Knowledge and ability to identify community resources and human service agencies to support families
  • Ability to effectively communicate orally and in writing including the creation of written reports
  • Proficiency in the use of Microsoft Office products
  • A valid driver’s license is required or the ability to obtain by the date of hire
Additional Considerations
  • Experience working with juveniles and their families
  • Probation Officer experience
  • Experience with community programming
  • Demonstrated ability to interpret and apply laws, regulations, guidelines and procedures
  • Bilingual in Spanish and English
Background & Pre-employment Screenings

Selected applicants are subject to a background investigation and pre-employment drug screen. A valid driver’s license is required of DJJ employees to operate a state-owned or leased vehicle.
