The Louisiana Department of Public Safety & Corrections - Corrections Services, Alexandria District, seeks a supervisory Probation and Parole Officer to oversee field staff delivering probation, parole, pardon and work release services.

Candidates should have three years of relevant experience, or two years plus a master's degree, and must meet POST certification requirements; a Louisiana driver’s license and firearm eligibility are required.

Qualifications

  • Three years of experience as a probation or parole officer, or in counseling, psychology, social work, education, criminal justice, or administrative services.
  • Possession of an active Peace Officer Standards and Training (POST) certification.
  • Possession of a current Louisiana driver’s license.
  • The incumbent must be able to handle and carry firearms.

Responsibilities

  • Provide guidance, technical assistance, and supervision of subordinate personnel to insure accuracy, timeliness, legal conformance, acceptability of standards, and quality of all casework and investigative activities.
  • Coordinate and supervise a group of Probation and Parole Officers engaged in activities related to the violation process, including planning arrests, transporting violators, coordinating probable cause, and revocation hearings.
  • Monitor casework activities to ensure proper use of community resources, enforce conditions, and make sound treatment decisions for offenders and violations.
  • Participate in personnel management activities including hiring processes, background investigations, disciplinary actions, evaluations, and acting manager duties.
  • Perform special managerial functions such as case assignments, investigations, intake services, and coordination with criminal justice agencies.

This position performs responsible supervisory work in the direct supervision of Probation and Parole Officers in the delivery of probation, parole, pardon and work release services.

Three years of experience as a probation or parole officer, or in counseling, psychology, social work, education, criminal justice, or administrative services plus one of the following:

  • 1. Three years of experience in corrections or law enforcement
  • 2. Three years of continuous active military duty (all Military Occupational Specialties apply)
  • 3. Six years of full-time experience in any field
  • 4. A bachelor's degree

OR

Two years of experience as a probation or parole officer, or in counseling, psychology, social work, education, criminal justice, or administrative services plus a master's degree in counseling, psychology, social work, education, business administration, public administration, or a criminal justice field.

EXPERIENCE SUBSTITUTION: Every 30 semester hours earned from an accredited college or university will be credited as one year of experience towards the six years of full-time work experience in any field. The maximum substitution allowed is 120 semester hours which substitutes for a maximum of four years of experience in any field.

NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: An applicant who has been convicted of a misdemeanor crime of domestic violence or a felony, or who is under indictment on a felony charge will be disqualified until relief from the disabilities imposed by state and federal laws is granted.

Possession of a current Louisiana driver's license.

This position requires the incumbent to handle and carry firearms.

Possession of an active Peace Officer Standards and Training (POST) certification.

  • Provide guidance, technical assistance, and supervision of subordinate personnel to include periodic audits, reviews, and conferences to insure accuracy, timeliness, legal conformance, acceptability of standards, and quality of all casework and investigative activities.
  • Coordinates and supervises a group of Probation and Parole Officers engaged in activities related to the violation process to include planning of arrests, transportation of violators, coordination of probable cause, and revocation hearings.
  • Monitors casework activities to insure that subordinates make proper use of community based resources, properly enforces general and special conditions; employs counseling and makes sound decisions related to treatment of offenders and violations of conditions.
  • Conduct new employee orientation and training and in-service training of field personnel, journeymen, and specialists to assure their continuing development and satisfactory accomplishment of assignments.
  • Assist in the personnel management of the office by participating in the personnel selection process, employment background investigations, administration of disciplinary actions within a unit, documentation of supervisory evaluations, and serving as acting manager in the absence of the Probation and Parole District Manager.
  • Perform special managerial functions which may include, but are not limited to, assignment of cases, investigations, intake services, and coordination and liaison with criminal justice agencies, community service agencies, community bases and residential facilities.
  • Manage various statistical and other administrative functions and special purpose programs and projects as delegated and monitored by the Probation and Parole District Manager-Adult consistent with established office policies and guidelines.
WORK ENVIRONMENT

Employee will supervise Probation & Parole Officers and Probation & Parole Specialists.

Position-Specific Details
  • The selected employee may be required to serve a trial detail prior to being permanently promoted, or may be required to accept a probational appointment.

Compensation: This position has a Special Entrance Rate (SER) of $33.78 per hour.
