Job summary

Penn Medicine in West Chester, PA is seeking an experienced RN/FA to join the Operating Room. The RNFA provides comprehensive perioperative nursing care, applies the nursing process, and collaborates with surgeons, anesthesia and OR staff to support safe, high-quality patient care.

Requirements include BSN, PA RN licensure, RNFA certification per AORN standards (CNOR), ACLS, and at least two years of OR experience.

Qualifications

  • Graduate of an accredited Nursing Program; BSN required.
  • RNFA program certificate meeting AORN education standards; CNOR certification.
  • Two years OR experience required.
  • ACLS certification; CPR and ongoing education.
  • Proficiency in English; basic computer skills and data entry.
  • PA RN licensure required.

Responsibilities

  • Provides age-appropriate care, applying the nursing process and addressing diverse patient needs.
  • Uses resources for patients with language barriers, special needs, and changes in patient condition.
  • Maintains confidentiality and protects staff and patient safety with PPE and infection control.
  • Performs pain assessments and evaluates outcomes of nursing interventions.
  • Plans care based on patient needs and available resources; adjusts to OR schedule changes.
  • Ensures adherence to policies and organizational goals and supports quality improvement.

Department: Operating Room

General Summary Statement Provides comprehensive, quality nursing care through application of the nursing process. Adheres to Nursing Policies and Procedures and Organizational Goals and Objectives.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities Clinical Practice
  1. Provides age appropriate care for the population served. Gives consideration to growth & developmental phase of life, to age related factors such as thermal regulation, nutrition, medication administration, nutrition, safety and functional needs of the patient.
  2. Uses appropriate resources for patients with special needs such as language barriers, sensory problems, altered cognition, cultural and religious needs.
  3. Ensures attention to patient’s physical, spiritual and emotional well being.
  4. Demonstrates competency in assessment skills (Includes initial and ongoing assessments). 5. Performs pain assessments and intervenes to optimally meet patient’s needs for comfort.
  5. Plans clinical care based on patient’s needs and uses available resources.
  6. Performs clinical care in accordance with policy and procedure. 8. Evaluates outcomes of nursing interventions and takes appropriate actions to move patient toward reaching goals of care.
  7. Identifies situations that warrant patient rescue and takes appropriate action, e.g. Patient emergencies, changes in OR schedule and assignment changes.
  8. Maintains confidentiality.
  9. Utilizes personal protective devices to protect self from accidental exposure to blood borne pathogens.
Department of Nursing and Organization Support
  1. Attends assigned committee meetings and contributes to the committees.
  2. Communicates support of organizational values and strategies.
  3. Supports the following organizational programs: Magnet®, Hospital of Distinction, Joint Commission Disease Specific Certification, Nursing Councils, and integrates their standards into clinical practice.
  4. Reviews nursing quality data, e.g. NDNQI and identifies how to apply best practice into own practice and mentor others towards meeting quality target goals.
Education Training and Experience
  • Graduate of an accredited Nursing Program. BSN is required.
  • Certificate of completion of RNFA program that meets the "AORN recommended education standards for first assistant programs" Certification in perioperative nursing (CNOR) ACLS certification Two years OR experience is required.
  • Perioperative credit course is required. Basic computer skills: keyboard, mouse use. Ability to complete data entry on clinical documentation screens. Ability to use email and internet. Ability to successfully complete on the job training for CCH computer programs. Ability to speak, read, write and understand English. Maintains CPR, ACLS, TST, and Education on the Go within TCCH deadlines Licensure/Certification Current Pennsylvania
