Job summary

St. Davids South Austin Medical Center, part of HCA Healthcare, is seeking a Laboratory Assistant PRN to join its on-site laboratory team.

You will perform phlebotomy, specimen handling, and assist microbiology and histology sections while ensuring proper identification and documentation of samples. You will also manage sample transport, reporting, and communications with health information management and physicians, contributing to efficient lab operations and patient care.

Qualifications

• 1 year of experience performing hospital phlebotomy.
• High school graduate or GED equivalent.
• Formal phlebotomy training from an accredited program – preferred.

Responsibilities

• Perform venipuncture and capillary collection appropriate to specific age groups.
• Collect, process, and transport specimens.
• Identify proper tubes, containers, transport media, and storage temperature for each test type.
• Ensure positive identification of each patient and respective samples.
• Keep collection trays and outpatient collection area neat and well stocked.
• Perform specimen processing for various sub departments.
• Assist in microbiology, including plating cultures and QA checks.
• Assist in histology, including basic procedures and specimen tracking.
• Answer phones, relay messages, and transfer patient test results.
• Distribute reports to Health Information Management, physicians, and clients.
• Maintain records of standing orders for outpatients.
