Responsibilities

  • Prepare sections of human tissue for examination.

  • Maintain laboratory equipment and quality controls.
  • Label requisitions, containers, cassettes, and slides as needed.
  • Maintain equipment and track routine maintenance and quality controls.

Job description

PRN - Histology Lab Assistant/Embedding

Location: Plymouth, MN 55441

Hours: Vary, Days: Vary. PRN/Limited Benefits Available.

In this role, you will:
  • This position outlines the responsibilities and requirements for a histology Lab Assistant, focusing on the embedding area. Upon completing the technical training program, both the Supervisor and Laboratory Director will assess the Histology Lab Assistant's performance quality and standards. Following this assessment, a competency assessment plan will be executed.
  • The Histology Lab Assistant will be responsible for preparing sections of human tissue from surgical procedures for microscopic examination and patient diagnosis. This includes using the technique of embedding to properly orient specimens in paraffin blocks.
  • Operates computerized laboratory equipment to fix, dehydrate, and infiltrate tissue specimens with wax, preserving them for study by Pathologists.
  • May label requisitions, specimen containers, cassettes, and/or slides and affix coverslips to slides.
  • Maintains laboratory equipment and tracks all routine maintenance and quality controls performed.
All you need is:
  • Knowledge of CLIA regulations regarding proficiency testing, quality assurance, and quality control.
  • Knowledge of laboratory policies and procedures, equipment, and testing to monitor control checks.
  • Knowledge of medical terminology to communicate with laboratory staff.
  • Knowledge of English grammar, spelling, and punctuation.
  • Skill in using computer programs and applications.
  • Skill in performing a full range of laboratory tests and operating a variety of laboratory instrumentation and equipment.
  • Ability to listen, read, understand, and follow oral and written instructions.
  • Ability to communicate clearly and concisely.
  • Ability to establish and maintain positive relationships with employees, physicians, vendors, clients, and external agencies.
Bonus points if you’ve got:
  • Minimum of one (1) year relevant experience as a Laboratory professional is preferred.
Education
  • Some college degree in Laboratory Science or Medical Laboratory Technology from an accredited institution, or equivalent under the 1988 CLIA guidelines for high‑complexity testing.
  • OR education/training equivalent that includes at least 60 semester hours or equivalent, with 24 semester hours of medical laboratory technology courses, or 24 semester hours in science courses including 6 semester hours of chemistry, 6 of biology, and 12 of chemistry, biology, or medical laboratory technology in any combination.
  • Eligible for state licensure, if applicable.
  • Eligible for Board of Certification (BOC) by the American Society of Clinical Pathologists (ASCP).
