Job summary

Godfrey & Kahn is seeking a Privacy and Cybersecurity Associate in Milwaukee to advise clients on data privacy, cybersecurity, breach response and related technology matters, alongside a growing team of partners and associates.

The ideal candidate will hold a J.D. from an ABA-accredited law school, be admitted (or eligible) to practice in Wisconsin, and possess privacy certifications (CIPP/US, CIPP/E, CIPM). Strong communication and teamwork in a fast-paced environment are essential.

Qualifications

• J.D. from ABA-accredited law school.
• Admitted to practice or eligible for admission to Wisconsin.
• Certified Privacy Professional credentials (CIPP/US, CIPP/E, CIPM).
• Experience as a junior associate at a leading law firm or comparable in-house counsel.
• Experience in cyber-incident response, security/privacy program implementation or AI governance.
• Superior organizational and time management skills.
• Strong verbal and written communication skills and comfort with client interactions.
• Ability to work cooperatively as part of a team.
• Proven ability to work in a fast-paced team environment with multiple deadlines.

Responsibilities

• Advise clients in responding to cybersecurity incidents and data breaches.
• Provide support on M&A privacy/cyber due diligence from pre-deal to post-closing.
• Draft and negotiate technology, AI, data privacy, data sharing and information security agreements.
• Advise on data privacy and security laws (GDPR, HIPAA, GLBA, CCPA, state laws).
• Advise on best practices related to data governance, including AI.
• Apply knowledge of US and EU privacy regimes to develop best practices.
• Draft cybersecurity policies and conduct tabletop exercises with clients.
• Assist with managing technology disputes.
• Communicate with supervising attorneys on compliance, enforcement trends and privacy policies.
• Perform other related duties as assigned.

POSITION SUMMARY:

This position offers a unique opportunity in the dynamic, cutting edge and ever-evolving area of data privacy and cybersecurity. The Privacy & Cybersecurity Associate’s role is to advise clients on cybersecurity and data privacy issues with a growing team of Shareholders and Associates, in all phases of the practice group’s work. Our team advises clients on a full spectrum of legal matters including proactive cybersecurity and privacy compliance planning, breach response, technology contracting, AI guidance, regulatory investigation and litigation management.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

• Advise clients in responding to cybersecurity incidents and data breaches.
• Provide subject matter support on mergers and acquisitions, including data privacy and cybersecurity due diligence from pre-deal through post-closing.
• Draft and negotiate agreements related to technology, AI, data privacy, data sharing and information security.
• Advise clients on data privacy and security laws, including GDPR, HIPAA, GLBA, CCPA, consumer protection as well as similar state laws and regulations.
• Advise clients on best practices related to data governance, including AI.
• Apply general knowledge of privacy and data security regimes in the US and in the EU to develop best practices.
• Draft cybersecurity policies and conduct tabletop exercises with clients.
• Assist with managing technology disputes.
• Communicate with supervising attorneys on recommendations on related compliance regimes, enforcement trends and privacy policies.
• Perform other related duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS AND EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS:

• J.D. from ABA accredited law school.
• Admitted to practice or eligible for admission to practice in the State of Wisconsin.
• The ideal candidate would have:
  • Experience as a junior associate at a leading law firm or comparable in-house counsel position.
  • A Certified Information Privacy Professional Certification (i.e. CIPP/US, CIPP/E, CIPM).
  • Experience in cyber-incident response, security and privacy program implementation, or AI governance.
• Superior organizational and time management skills.
