Role Overview
Principal Supplier Quality Engineer – San Jose, CA (reports to Director, Supplier Quality). This role is responsible for establishing and enforcing quality and reliability standards for Bloom Energy’s fuel cell components across the organization. The Engineer will collaborate closely with supply chain, engineering, and cross‑functional teams to assess supplier capability, drive continuous improvement, and ensure product quality throughout the product life cycle.
Responsibilities
- Assess potential suppliers’ capabilities, identify improvement opportunities, and deliver on time aligned with Total Quality goals.
- Evaluate manufacturability of new product designs and support engineering and suppliers in improving manufacturability.
- Focus on process capability to achieve the lowest total cost.
- Manage product and process development, including change management with suppliers to exceed business requirements.
- Drive supplier development and deploy manufacturing processes that meet Bloom Energy requirements.
- Review prototype and production part quality document submissions for acceptability.
- Convert documentation into engineered practices to deliver predictable, consistent parts/products.
- Perform supplier quality assessments at system and product level, including PPAP, GR&R, GD&T.
- Support manufacturing, quality, and engineering in analyzing and dispositioning suspect supplier material.
- Lead continuous improvement across the supply base using quality and lean manufacturing tools.
- Deploy traditional quality improvement tools (corrective action, roadmaps) for systematic improvements at suppliers.
- Improve supplier quality processes such as assessments, supplier management, part approval, and corrective actions globally.
- Participate in supplier selection and evaluation.
- Work cross‑functionally to establish quality requirements for external suppliers.
- Update legal contractual language to protect Bloom Energy’s quality interests and achieve lowest Cost of Quality.
- Lead high‑visibility root‑cause investigations using 8D problem‑solving for timely resolution.
- Drive Design and Process Failure Modes and Effects Analyses (DFMEA/PFMEA) to assess and improve product designs and processes.
Qualifications
- BS (or MS/Ph.D.) in Chemical, Mechanical, Electrical, Industrial Engineering, Materials Science, or Physics.
- Minimum 10+ years of relevant experience in supplier quality, quality management systems, and manufacturing excellence.
- Experience auditing and accrediting Quality Management Systems.
- Strong project and process management skills, with a track record of delivering First‑Time Right‑on‑Time.
- Proven ability to build technical credibility with internal engineering staff and external suppliers.
- Excellent interpersonal and leadership skills to lead cross‑functional teams at senior levels.
- Proficiency in MS Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) and statistical tools such as JMP, R, Tableau, or similar.
- ASQ–certified CQE and Six Sigma Black Belt preferred.
- Hands‑on experience with SPC, DOE, ANOVA, and training of peers and suppliers.
- Strong analytical and problem‑solving skills; bias for action, multitasking, and zero‑defect mindset.
- Customer‑focused, both internally and externally.
Travel Requirements
20%–40% travel, domestic or international, as required by the role.
Compensation & Benefits
Salary Range: $151,700.00 – $218,300.00. The total compensation includes standard company benefits and is based on relevant skills and experience.
