Switchgear Magazine is seeking an experienced Principal Substation Engineer to support the development and execution of high-voltage substation projects from concept through commissioning. This is a 12-month contract opportunity that can be performed remotely, with travel required and periodic reporting to Juno Beach, Florida.

Job description

Seeking an experienced Principal Substation Engineer to support the development and execution of high-voltage substation projects from initial concept through construction and commissioning.

This is a 12-month contract opportunity that can be performed remotely, with travel required and periodic reporting to Juno Beach, Florida.

The successful candidate will provide senior technical and project engineering oversight across complex substation projects, coordinating internal engineering teams, external Engineers of Record (EORs), project stakeholders, suppliers and transmission organizations.

Key Responsibilities

• Support substation projects from early-stage development through engineering, construction and commissioning.
• Define engineering requirements, project scope and technical deliverables during conceptual development.
• Plan and coordinate complex substation engineering projects while managing schedule, budget, resources, risks and changes.
• Provide technical oversight of external Engineers of Record (EORs) and engineering consultants.
• Ensure designs comply with project specifications, interconnection requirements and applicable IEEE, NESC, ASCE and industry standards.
• Manage the development and review of substation design packages, including physical drawings, electrical schematics and civil design documents.
• Coordinate engineering reviews through 10%, 30%, 60%, 90% and Issued for Construction (IFC) design stages.
• Review engineering drawings and technical documentation and provide comments to external engineering partners.
• Support transmission interconnection activities, including review of system impact studies, facility studies, reactive and harmonic studies and interconnection agreements.
• Coordinate with transmission owners, operators and ISOs to ensure technical requirements are incorporated into project designs.
• Support procurement and management of long-lead substation equipment and engineering services.
• Coordinate with multidisciplinary engineering resources to establish priorities, work plans and project interfaces.
• Support construction and commissioning activities from an engineering perspective.
• Provide project updates, technical presentations and risk assessments to internal and external stakeholders.
• Work with equipment manufacturers and OEMs to ensure equipment designs integrate with project requirements.

Required Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering.
• 10+ years of experience in high-voltage substation design and engineering is strongly preferred.
• Strong experience delivering or supporting complex substation projects.
• Experience in project engineering and/or project management within transmission, utilities or power infrastructure.
• Strong understanding of high-voltage substation design practices and engineering documentation.
• Experience coordinating external engineering consultants and/or Engineers of Record.
• Knowledge of relevant industry codes and standards, including IEEE and NESC.
• Strong communication skills with the ability to coordinate across engineering, project management, construction and external stakeholders.
• Ability to manage multiple technical priorities and projects simultaneously.
• Ability to travel within North America.

Preferred Qualifications

• Professional Engineer (PE) license.
• PMP certification.
• Master’s degree in Engineering or an MBA.
• Experience with transmission interconnection requirements and studies.
• Experience supporting projects through construction and commissioning.

A PE is advantageous but the position does not require the successful candidate to stamp engineering drawings.
