Job summary

City of Durham is seeking a Principal Engineer for the Stormwater Review Group within the Development Infrastructure Division. The role focuses on independent review of development plans to ensure compliance with stormwater regulations, leveraging hydrology, hydraulics, and SCM knowledge.

Responsibilities include field inspections, preparing technical documentation, and providing guidance to departments and external agencies.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering or related field or equivalent experience.
• Five years of related engineering experience.
• North Carolina Professional Engineer Registration or equivalent.
• Valid NC Class C Driver’s License with a clean driving record.

Responsibilities

• Manage projects, programs, and department operations; develop contracts and budgets; set goals and schedules.
• Oversee data collection, analyses, and engineering studies; identify improvements and implement solutions.
• Perform field inspections to ensure safety and regulatory compliance.
• Review engineering plans, drawings, and bids; prepare reports and city communications.
• Coordinate public meetings; provide technical expertise to departments and external agencies.
• Design and evaluate special projects; create drawings as required.
• Potentially lead workers, supervise staff, and conduct performance evaluations.
