Job summary

Primis is seeking a Principal Database Engineer to own and optimize enterprise SQL Server environments while partnering with Java teams on performance improvements. This remote role requires hands-on experience with on-prem and AWS-hosted databases, including Always On and replication, to ensure high availability and reliability.

You will troubleshoot across application and database layers, design high-throughput solutions, and contribute to ETL and reporting pipelines.

Qualifications

• 10+ years hands-on SQL Server in enterprise production environments.
• Hands-on Java/Spring Boot experience in enterprise stacks.
• Experience administering AWS-hosted databases and data pipelines.
• Strong knowledge of query tuning, indexing, and stored procedures.
• Proven ability to troubleshoot across application and database layers.

Responsibilities

• Take ownership of enterprise SQL Server environments, tuned and running at scale.
• Collaborate with Java engineering teams to improve application and database performance.
• Analyze complex queries, execution plans, and indexing for performance gains.
• Diagnose production issues spanning Java apps, SQL Server, and AWS infra.
• Architect and roll out performance improvements for high-throughput systems.
• Set up and maintain Always On Availability Groups, replication, and disaster recovery.
• Monitor database health and capacity with standard tooling.
• Support reporting, ETL pipelines, and data processing with DB expertise.
• Work with architects, developers, infra engineers, and DevOps to ship scalable solutions.
• Automate operational tasks using PowerShell and T-SQL.
