The Principal Sourcing Engineer - Devices is a Tier 1 strategic sourcing position designed to strengthen Microsoft’s hardware capabilities by leading strategies that deliver meaningful business advantages. This role involves regular engagement with senior executives and requires business acumen, strategic thinking, and industry insight.

Success in this role will be measured by the definition and execution of Tier 1 strategy, competitiveness of negotiated manufacturing and service costs, strength of business relationships, and performance of Tier 1 partners.

Responsibilities
  • Sourcing Strategy: participate in the development and deployment of the Tier 1 vendor short- and long-term sourcing strategy to achieve world-class services with best-in-class pricing and terms.
  • Drive and articulate strategy discussions with Microsoft’s senior executives and business partners.
  • Externally, sell a scenario that entices manufacturing and service providers to deliver world-class results by establishing long-term, productive business relationships.
  • Aggressively manage total costs while enabling the right level of service and flexibility; provide excellent people management and leadership to create and communicate a vision for the future and develop team members.
  • Organizational Leadership: collaborate with cross-functional teams and other Sourcing leaders to ensure strategy includes all opportunities and drive adoption toward supplier roadmap alignment.
  • Account Management: lead and manage global account relationships with executive and senior management levels from CM/ODM companies; provide strategic business leadership, negotiations management, and execution of regular business reviews.
  • Business Development: drive supplier selection in new hardware/technology spaces, negotiate master contracts and NDAs, and work with product teams to assess technology and manufacturing capabilities and overall fit for Microsoft.
  • Execution: drive budget compliance while maintaining solid relationships with internal teams and manufacturing service providers.
Qualifications

Required Qualifications:

  • Master's degree in Business, Supply Chain Management, Engineering, Materials Science, or related field AND 6+ years experience in procurement, supply chain, sourcing, engineering, operations, or relevant sales-related roles
  • OR Bachelor's degree in Business, Supply Chain Management, Engineering, Materials Science, or related field AND 8+ years experience in procurement, supply chain, sourcing, engineering, operations, or relevant sales-related roles
  • OR equivalent experience.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • 10+ years’ experience in strategic sourcing in Commercial manufacturing industry.
  • Expertise in market analysis and sourcing planning to formulate sourcing strategies, including market size, players, growth, pricing trends, etc.
  • Expertise in Financial Statement Analysis to derive should-cost models and assess supplier economics prior to RFx.
  • Experience with factory operations and cost accounting; Make vs. Buy experience is a plus.
  • Project management and Supply Chain Operations Management experience.
  • Ability to assess and improve total landed cost through the supply chain from component sourcing to distribution.
  • Executive presence with the ability to articulate positions and build rapport quickly.
  • Demonstrated ambition to grow with Microsoft and the ability to navigate ambiguity with facts and well-thought strategies.
  • Proficient communication, motivation, and team leadership to unlock value.
  • Strategic thinking with attention to detail to support ideology with facts.
  • Ability to articulate points of view with executive management and execute plans when directed.
  • A collaborative team player who can roll up sleeves to get the job done.

Salary: Sourcing Engineering IC5 - The typical base pay range for this role across the U.S. is USD $139,900 - $274,800 per year. There is a different range for specific locations (San Francisco Bay Area, New York City metro) with a base pay range of USD $188,000 - $304,200 per year.
