Job summary

Upstart is seeking a Principal Software Engineer for the Core Pricing Team. You will shape the technical vision, drive the design of large-scale pricing systems, and partner with ML scientists to optimize borrower-lender matching. Remote role, with in-person collaboration as needed across U.S. teams.

You will mentor engineers, influence product direction, and own architectural decisions that impact revenue for Personal, Auto, and Home loan products.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or Mathematics (or equivalent) with 8+ years of experience.
• Experience building highly scalable systems using containerization (Docker) and Kubernetes.
• Experience designing flexible, extensible APIs and scalable architectures.
• Proficiency in Python, Java, C#, or C++ and strong communication abilities.
• Track record mentoring technical leaders and delivering in fast-paced environments.

Responsibilities

• Define the long-term technical direction and roadmap for Pricing aligned with Upstart’s business objectives.
• Lead design and development of a system that continuously optimizes supply-demand matching for the marketplace.
• Collaborate with ML scientists to improve models and core metrics.
• Guide architectural evolution of Pricing engineering systems across multiple teams.
• Uncover alignment across complex requirements, trade-offs, and product direction.
• Prototype new technologies to foster a culture of innovation.
• Lead from the front and mentor technical leaders.
