Job summary

Point of Rental is seeking a senior software engineer to lead the WinForms-to-web modernization. You will work hands-on across Angular front ends, C#/.NET services, and SQL Server, shaping architecture while improving legacy code.

You will regularly use AI coding tools to accelerate delivery and set guardrails for their use. The role emphasizes autonomous problem solving, mentorship, and close collaboration with Product to translate business challenges into robust technical plans.

Qualifications

• 8+ years as a professional software engineer with end-to-end ownership of systems.
• 5+ years with C# and .NET, building production applications.
• 5+ years building production apps in a component-based SPA framework; Angular preferred.
• 5+ years with SQL Server (or similar) and writing complex SQL by hand.
• A track record of setting technical direction that others follow.
• Comfort with reading/modifying large legacy codebases.
• Fluent use of AI coding assistants in daily workflow.
• Sound judgment on where AI helps and where it doesn't.
• Depth in algorithms, data structures and design patterns.
• Preferred: RESTful API development, microservices, Azure DevOps, and automated testing (Jest, NUnit).

Responsibilities

• Own the technical direction of the WinForms-to-web modernization: decide what gets rewritten, what gets wrapped, what gets left alone, and in what order, then make those calls stick
• Build and ship full stack, from Angular front ends through C#/.NET services to SQL Server. Hands-on role.
• Work confidently in large, long-lived legacy code, and improve it safely over time.
• Use AI coding tools daily to accelerate modernization and onboarding to unfamiliar code.
• Set standards for AI tooling usage with context and guardrails.
• Design and hand-write complex SQL needed for enterprise-scale features.
• Mentor teammates through design reviews, pairing, and guidance.
• Operate autonomously on ambiguous problems with a clear written approach.
• Partner with Product to translate business problems into durable technical plans.

About the Team

Point of Rental is the global leader in rental software, and our platform runs the day-to-day operations of thousands of rental businesses worldwide. This team owns the enterprise cloud applications at the center of that, including a years-in-the-making modernization of our battle-tested WinForms product into a modern web UI. It's a small group of full-stack engineers who ship, care about the craft, and expect the same from each other.

What You’ll Do

• Own the technical direction of the WinForms-to-web modernization: decide what gets rewritten, what gets wrapped, what gets left alone, and in what order, then make those calls stick

• Build and ship full stack, from Angular front ends through C#/.NET services to SQL Server. This is a hands-on role, not an architecture-diagram role

• Work confidently in large, long-lived legacy code, and make it safer and better as you go rather than working around it

• Use AI coding tools as a daily part of how you ship, including getting oriented in unfamiliar code fast and accelerating the modernization work

• Set the bar for how the team uses AI tooling: shared standards, context, and a clear view of where we deliberately don't rely on it

• Design and hand-write the complex SQL behind features that have to perform at enterprise scale

• Raise the level of the engineers around you through design review, pairing, and mentorship

• Operate with real autonomy on ambiguous problems, and bring the team along with a clear written case for your approach

• Partner with Product to turn business problems into technical plans that survive contact with reality

Who You Are

• 8+ years as a professional software engineer, with several of those years owning significant systems end to end

• 5+ years with C# and .NET, building production applications

• 5+ years building production applications in a component-based SPA framework, Angular strongly preferred. We're on Angular 19 with Nx, and you'll need to get productive there quickly

• 5+ years with SQL Server or another major RDBMS, including writing complex SQL by hand

• A track record of setting technical direction that other engineers actually followed, and of being right often enough that they kept following it

• Comfort reading and safely modifying large legacy code. You don't need to love it, but you do need to be undaunted by it

• Fluent, everyday use of AI coding assistants (GitHub Copilot, Cursor, Claude Code, or similar) as part of your real workflow, not as an experiment

• Sound judgment about where AI helps and where it doesn't. You review what it produces, catch what it gets wrong, and don't ship code you can't explain

• Real depth in algorithms, data structures, and design patterns, whether that came from a CS/Math/CE degree or from doing the work

• Preferred: RESTful API development, porting desktop functionality to the web, microservices/serverless, Azure DevOps, Scrum with short sprints, and automated testing at multiple levels (Jest, NUnit).
