Job summary

Point of Rental is seeking an entry-level QA/Software Engineer to join the team and write tests from day one. You will work across JS/TS in Angular, Node/NestJS, and PHP surfaces, diagnosing issues by reading code and fixing defects with team review. You’ll grow into broader ownership while building internal tools and contributing to releases.

The role emphasizes learning the product, the domain, and the end-to-end SDLC, with mentorship and a clear path toward Full Stack Engineer as you progress.

Qualifications

• Demonstrate ability to read and explain code and make improvements.
• Showcase a capstone, bootcamp project, GitHub profile, or prior work.
• Foundation in software development or testing from any pathway.
• Strong written bug reports and clear commit messages.
• Curiosity to trace edge cases to root cause and learn quickly.
• Understanding of the software development lifecycle and quality focus.
• Exposure to Playwright, Selenium, Cypress, SQL, REST APIs, Azure DevOps or Jira is a plus.

About the team

We build the cloud-native software that thousands of rental businesses around the world run on every day - the rental management platform and the e-commerce suite that sits on top of it.

This role is how we bring new engineers into that work. You'll start where the whole system is visible: verifying, breaking, and instrumenting the product before a customer ever sees it. That venture is one of the fastest ways there is to learn a large codebase and a complicated domain at the same time. And you'll be writing code from your first sprint - reading it, fixing it, shipping it alongside the developers, not filing tickets over a wall at them.

We built this role deliberately as an entry point for people early in their engineering careers.

What you'll do

Write code from your first sprint

• Write and maintain automated tests in the same repositories and the same languages as the product - JavaScript and TypeScript against our Angular front ends and Node/NestJS services, PHP where our longer-standing surfaces live

• Read the codebase to work out why something broke, not just that it broke

• Fix low-risk defects yourself and take them through code review like any other engineer

• Build the small internal tools and scripts that make the team's testing and release process faster

• Take on scoped product work under a mentor's review as you ramp

Do the quality work that teaches you the system

• Verify new features and fixes across our web and desktop products, and write bug reports a developer can act on immediately

• Build and maintain test plans for new features alongside senior engineers

• Run regression passes so a new release doesn't break what already worked

• Partner with developers and product managers to understand requirements and flag gaps early

• Take part in release readiness reviews

What you bring

• You can write and read code in at least one language. We care that you can build something and explain the choices you made - not which stack you learned on.

• Something we can look at: a capstone, a bootcamp project, a personal project, a GitHub profile, or work from a previous role

• A foundation in software development or testing, through a degree, a coding bootcamp, a self-taught path, an internship, or early professional experience

• Strong written communication - your bug reports and your commit messages both tell the whole story

• Curiosity about how systems break, and the patience to chase an edge case down to its root cause

• A working understanding of the software development lifecycle and where quality sits in it

• Preferred, not required: exposure to Playwright, Selenium, Cypress or similar; SQL; REST APIs; Azure DevOps or Jira; SaaS products

Who this role is for. You might be arriving from a CS degree, a coding bootcamp, a self-taught path, the military, or a completely different career. You might already work at Point of Rental in support, implementation, or professional services and want to move into engineering - if you know the rental business cold, you already have the half of this job that takes longest to teach. How you'll grow

The path from this role is to Full Stack Engineer. That's the destination, and the role is built to get you there.

Start here. Learn the product and the domain. Own exploratory and release testing. Get fluent in our codebase, our tooling, and how we ship.

Then. Write automated tests in the product repositories. Fix defects and take your code through review. Build the internal tooling your team runs on.

Then. Take scoped feature work under mentorship - front end, services, and data - until you're carrying it on your own.

You'll have a named mentor, regular one-on-ones, code review used as a teaching tool, and dedicated learning time every week. We promote on demonstrated ability rather than on a calendar, but the destination is written down and your manager's job is to get you to it.
