Position Summary
Join our team as a Principal Software Engineer for a key position within Directed Spend Team to help drive the development of next generation customer benefits platforms.
Walmart’s Directed Spend Payments group is responsible for enabling the core services and systems that steers customers to buy pre-defined merchandise on eCommerce Stores and Sam’s Club, and to provide ability to allow or prevent purchase of an item or set of items through pre-set rules tied to payment or identification device. Walmart is investing in transforming these spaces with latest technology and we are looking for talented individuals who can use their engineering and leadership skills to help our teams solve complex problems. You will be part of the application development team leading software design and implementation, problem solving, leading consistency across our team in quality standards, ensuring our teams adhere to micro-service architecture principles, research and propose creative ideas that allows our teams to solve problems faster and provide engineering efficiency as they work with our customers to deliver world-class software solutions. This role is part of Directed Spend team and will build the next generation multi-tenant, client agnostic, highly scalable, omni channel unified Directed Spend solution to seamlessly enable a frictionless customer checkout experience across all sales channels globally. We process millions of transactions daily through our high-performance services running in Cloud.
What you'll do:
- Guide and shape the direction of overall technical strategy.
- Develop and communicate clear technical vision and strategy that aligns with organization's business goals and objectives.
- Collaborate with other departments and stakeholders to identify and solve complex problems.
- Drive the overall architecture for Directed Spend spanning across multiple teams.
- Lead the work of other small groups of six to ten engineers in software development and design, identifying short- and long- term solutions and timeline; reviewing and approving proposed solutions, implementing new architectural patterns; and performing design and code reviews of changes.
- Provide support to the business for new and existing systems by responding to user questions, concerns, and issues (for example, technical feasibility); researching and identifying needed solutions; determining implementation designs; providing guidance regarding implications of new and enhanced systems; and directing users to appropriate contacts for issues outside of own domain.
- Effectively translate requirements into project parameters while working with agility from cradle to grave.
- Help cross-functional teams to solve for business problems and develop solutions that enable us to redefine a “best-in-class” customer experience.
- Encourage the project teams that you oversee to work collaboratively and to aim for insight-driven outcomes.
- Troubleshoot business and production issues by gathering information (for example, issue, impact, criticality); performing root cause analysis to reduce future issues; engaging support teams when needed; developing solutions; driving the development of an action plan; performing actions as designated in the plan; and completing online documentation.
- Demonstrate up-to-date expertise and apply this to the development, execution, and improvement of action plans by providing expert advice and guidance to others in the application of information and best practices; supporting and aligning efforts to meet customer and business needs; and building commitment for perspectives and rationales.
- Provide and support the implementation of business solutions by building relationships and partnerships with key stakeholders; identifying business needs; determining and carrying out necessary processes and practices; monitoring progress and results; recognizing and capitalizing on improvement opportunities; and adapting to competing demands, organizational changes, and new responsibilities.
What you'll bring:
- Over 10+ years of experience in building and modernizing a broad array of technology spanning both front and backend development.
- Strong expertise in modern development practices and CICD.
- Strong expertise in enterprise architecture, integration patterns, data models and algorithms.
- Clear, concise communication skills.
- Ability to multitask between several different requirements and features concurrently.
- Experience with cloud native technology and platform capabilities.
- Superior analytical skills with a good problem-solving attitude. Ability to perform in a team environment. Have a true passion about Technology.
- Design and implement scalable software application using Java, Spring framework, SQL/NOSQL databases like Cassandra, Cosmos DB.
- Design and develop RESTful APIs and distributed and event-driven applications using messaging systems Apache Kafka, Rabbit MQ.
- Strong development experience in multiple modern programming languages such as NodeJs, Python, ReactJS/Angular.
- Deploy applications in public clouds like Google Cloud Platform, Microsoft Azure and on-prem using technologies like Docker and Kubernetes.
- Develop integration and unit test suites testing framework like Junit, TestNG.
- Extensive experience in cloud architecture and strong understanding of cloud technology, including – Global Tech Managed Service Offerings, Security and Cloud migration.
- Design alerting and monitoring for the application using tools like Splunk, Dynatrace.
- Ecommerce domain experience preferred in systems like Cart, Account, Orders management, Catalog, Product Recommendation, Checkout, Tax and Promotions.
Minimum Qualifications

- Option 1: Bachelor's degree in computer science, computer engineering, computer information systems, software engineering, or related area and 5 years’ experience in software engineering or related area.
- Option 2: 7 years’ experience in software engineering or related area.
