The Research Systems Principal Engineer will work on high-priority projects within Research Systems, embedding into the project team on a sustained basis, e.g., for our back-testing platform and forecasting system. The person will be a thought leader for projects, drive technical innovation, and help the teams design and build high-quality solutions. The role is hands-on, involving both implementation and mentoring of team members.

Responsibilities

• Provide strategic direction on architectural decisions and design, anticipating challenges and proactively addressing them.
• Implement features with a focus on business value, accelerating project delivery and providing solutions for key platform areas.
• Guide other team members on development tasks.
• Conduct code reviews, enforce coding standards, and participate in pair programming to enhance quality.
• Lead architectural discussions to ensure solutions are deployable, secure, cost-effective, and highly available.
• Contribute to building scalable data and HPC platforms for Research.
• Explore improvements through new data technologies and frameworks.
• Ensure high-quality metrics via automated testing, operational tooling, and reliable design.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or related field; 10+ years of experience; financial services experience is a plus.
• Proven experience deploying scalable, high-availability solutions.
• Experience with cloud-native solutions on AWS preferred.
• Experience with large-scale deployments and parallelism.
• Knowledge of container technologies like Docker, Kubernetes, Helm.
• Experience with data lakes, warehousing, and frameworks like Trino, Spark, Pandas / Polars, Iceberg.
• Familiarity with distributed compute and orchestration tools like Dask, Slurm, AWS Batch, Airflow, Prefect.
• Proficiency in programming languages such as Python, Java, Scala, and SQL.
• Self-motivated with the ability to translate technical directions into solutions.
• Leadership experience is a plus.
