The Bioconjugation Development Principal Scientist will lead bioconjugation efforts in discovery and process development to support Abzena Bristol’s operations. Responsibilities include conjugation screening, reaction optimization, downstream purification, scale-up activities, mentorship, client communication, and supporting sales and proposals.

Responsibilities

1. Drive technical execution of R&D bioconjugation activities, successfully delivering projects from start to finish.
2. Perform hands-on chromatographic purifications, membrane filtrations, buffer preparations, and conjugation reaction work-up.
3. Develop and optimize bioanalytical characterization methods of conjugates.
4. Design and manage project plans and conjugation strategies to improve project timelines.
5. Serve as technical lead and SME for internal and external communications.
6. Mentor and manage reports, monitor performance through KPIs.
7. Support sales and proposals with technical expertise, including client calls and bid defenses.
8. Present at scientific and business conferences.
9. Lead technical transfer of processes to manufacturing, including training and documentation.
10. Author and review laboratory notebooks, reports, protocols, batch records, SOPs, and presentations.
11. Provide SME support during manufacturing operations as needed.
12. Coordinate with QA/QC for development of GLP batches.
13. Stay updated on advancements in bioconjugation and bioprocessing.
14. Participate in hiring processes.

Qualifications

1. PhD in chemistry, bioorganic chemistry, or chemical biology with >5 years industry experience in bioconjugation or biotherapeutic conjugate development.
2. Experience applying bioconjugation or bioorthogonal chemistry techniques to produce conjugates at various scales.
3. Hands-on experience with chromatography systems for biomolecule purification.
4. Expertise in normal flow and tangential flow filtrations.
5. Knowledge of bioprocess optimization strategies and experimental design.
6. Proficiency in bioanalytical techniques such as HPLC, LC-MS, CE-SDS, UV-spectrophotometry.
7. Understanding of cGMP manufacturing operations and GxP principles.
8. Experience with large-scale bioprocess equipment.
