Job summary

Novartis is seeking a Principal Scientist I/II with extensive AAV gene therapy manufacturing experience to advance state-of-the-art downstream purification and developable platform processes. This onsite role in San Diego, CA leads a small team and collaborates across upstream, analytical, and development functions to drive early drug discovery and pipeline progress.

The ideal candidate holds a PhD in bioprocessing or related field with 3+ years of process development experience, hands-on AKTA

Qualifications

PhD in bioprocessing, biochemical engineering, gene therapy or related field with 3+ years of process development experience.
Experience in people management.
Knowledge of downstream purification processes including affinity and ion-exchange chromatography.
Hands-on AKTA purification systems experience.
Strong communication and problem-solving skills.
Ability to work in fast-paced matrix environment.

Responsibilities

Lead and manage a 3-5 person downstream process team.
Coordinate activities with upstream process and analytical teams.
Develop strategies with Disease Areas and support early drug discovery.
Transfer manufacturing process knowledge to TRD and advance programs.
Develop innovative and cost-effective downstream processes for next-generation AAV.
Manage multiple project workflows to ensure timely delivery.
Prepare written reports per electronic lab notebook.
Other related duties as assigned.
