Pratt & Whitney in Windsor Locks, CT, is seeking a Principal Project Engineer to lead cross-functional teams in a demanding engineering environment. You will drive integrated scheduling, budgeting, and technical planning to ensure on-time, on-budget delivery of complex programs.

The role requires strong leadership, STEM expertise, and experience with software/hardware development and multi-project execution.

Qualifications

• Degree in Science, Technology, Engineering or Mathematics (STEM) is typically required.
• Advanced degree in a related field or MBA is a plus.
• 8 years of relevant project experience, or 5 years with an advanced degree.
• Experience leading projects and teams within a matrixed organization.
• Experience with software design processes and hardware controllers.
• Strong organizational, analytical, written and verbal communication skills.

Responsibilities

• Drive project engineering processes using scheduling, earned value management, and risk and opportunity management.
• Collaborate with engineering disciplines, program office, production and quality to develop integrated execution plans.

This role offers the opportunity to make a meaningful impact while working with a talented, cross-functional team in a fast-moving engineering environment. As a Principal Project Engineer, you will help lead and elevate the performance of critical programs within the Environmental & Aircraft Control Systems, Digital Controls engineering organization. You’ll work alongside engineers, technical leaders, program teams, and other stakeholders to turn complex requirements and competing priorities into successful program outcomes.

What You Will Do

• Drive world-class Project Engineering processes using integrated scheduling, earned value management, and risk and opportunity management.
• Work collaboratively with other Engineering disciplines (Systems, Software, Software Systems, Mechanical, and Electrical), Program Office, Production, and Quality to develop an integrated execution plan to satisfy customer requirements across applicable operating conditions.
• Prepare and maintain project plans, budgets, and staffing requirements to ensure that all action item lists are completed and project quality expectations are met.
• Maintain and provide analysis of trends, performance, resource costs, and forecasting reports.
• Gather and analyze data to monitor projects' progress in terms of cost, schedule, and technical specifications to facilitate operations and ensure that established objectives and budgets are achieved.
• Meet with the project team weekly to manage project performance, status, open issues, and tasks.
• Analyze, identify, and address execution problems and risks; recommend and implement resolutions and mitigations to ensure the successful completion of project(s).
• Forecast project revenues, monitor costs, and re-estimate project costs monthly to maximize project profitability and ensure business objectives are met.
• Maintain and present plans, software development burndown and progress reports relating to the project(s) to track progress and ensure that established targets are met.
• Balance demands of multiple projects, which could include software development, hardware development, and production and sustainment support.
• Work autonomously with limited oversight from the manager.
• Support root-cause investigations and corrective actions for field returns and production issues.
• Develop bids based on customer proposal requests.
• Ensure compliance with company guidelines and internal processes, and recommend changes to improve the efficiency of scheduling, monitoring, and reporting of projects.
• Drive the execution of all engineering responsibilities on the program while meeting both internal and external customer expectations.
• Communicate directly with customers as required.
• Demonstrate strong interpersonal and communication skills, both verbal and written, technical experience, and the ability to work as a cross-functional team member.

Qualifications

• Typically requires a degree in Science, Technology, Engineering or Mathematics (STEM) unless prohibited by local laws/regulations and minimum 8 years prior relevant experience or an Advanced Degree in a related field and minimum 5 years of experience.
• BS or MS degree in Software, Software Systems, or Electrical Engineering, or an MBA degree.
• 5 years of experience leading projects and teams within a highly matrixed organization.
• Experience with the software design process/software design life cycle.
• Experience with controllers, circuit cards, digital control systems, and hardware.
• Exceptional organizational, analytical, written, and verbal communication skills.
• Ability to multitask and prioritize both daily issues and longer-term projects.
• Superior interpersonal and influencing skills, including coaching and mentoring of other engineering staff.
• Strong computer skills, with experience in MS Project and software development tools.
• Natural presence and comfort presenting to internal and external customers.
• Ability to bring team members together and work through problems to resolution.
