Position Overview: MP Materials seeks a highly skilled, hands-on Principal Process Engineer for its Magnetics business in Fort Worth, TX. The Process Engineering team manages the startup, maintenance, and continuous improvement of manufacturing processes at MP’s "Independence" facility for NdFeB magnets. The ideal candidate will have deep technical expertise in powder production, powder metallurgy, and metal finishing in a production environment. Responsibilities include leading engineering efforts to start, run, and optimize manufacturing processes, ensuring quality and innovation, and mentoring process engineers. This role offers the opportunity to contribute to building our team, factory, and culture, shaping the future of American manufacturing.

Position Responsibilities:

  1. Provide expert guidance on manufacturing processes for sintered rare earth permanent magnets, focusing on powder production, pressing, sintering, machining, and surface treatment.
  2. Lead cross-functional teams to commission and validate manufacturing processes, working with Quality to PPAP each process and machine.
  3. Monitor KPIs to identify challenges and opportunities for process improvement.
  4. Mentor and manage process engineers, fostering continuous learning and professional development.
  5. Investigate and resolve quality issues from powder manufacturing to finished magnets.
  6. Manage continuous improvement projects.

Basic Qualifications:

  1. Bachelor’s degree in relevant engineering discipline.
  2. 10+ years of experience as a process engineer or engineering leader in high-tech manufacturing.
  3. 5+ years of experience leading engineering teams.
  4. Deep technical knowledge in powder production, powder metallurgy, and/or metal finishing.
  5. Working knowledge of statistical process control and proven ability to implement SPC.
  6. Hands-on experience with design, implementation, and operation of manufacturing processes.
  7. Problem-solving skills and ability to advocate solutions effectively.
  8. Excellent communication skills for diverse audiences.
  9. Proficiency in Microsoft Office or similar tools.

Desired Qualities:

  1. Advanced degree in relevant engineering discipline.
  2. Deep knowledge of manufacturing of rare earth sintered magnets.
  3. Proficiency in FMEA and RCA.
  4. Six Sigma or Lean Manufacturing certification.
