Job summary

The City of Alexandria, VA is seeking a Principal Planner for Plan Implementation to lead long-range planning and drive execution of the Comprehensive Plan and related initiatives. You will coordinate across City departments, manage complex urban projects, and guide development economics and community engagement.

Required are extensive planning experience, supervisory skills, strong communication, and proficiency with GIS and graphic tools.

Qualifications

Minimum: Four-Year College Degree; five+ years of progressively responsible urban or transportation planning experience; related coursework.
Master’s degree in urban planning or related field; more than five years of progressive planning experience; AICP certification recommended.
Completion of college-level courses in urban planning, transportation or related fields; acceptable alternatives may exist.

Responsibilities

Leads and coordinates implementation of adopted plans, planning studies, redevelopment initiatives, and strategic projects.
Develops implementation strategies, action plans, timelines, and coordination mechanisms to move initiatives into execution.
Identifies funding sources, partnerships, and regulatory considerations affecting implementation.
Tracks progress, infrastructure improvements, and outcomes; prepares status updates and performance measures.
Supports redevelopment and economic development through project coordination with public and private partners.
Supervises urban planners; and performs related duties as assigned.
