Qualifications

  • 10+ years of direct marine structural engineering experience, focusing on bulkheads, docks, harbors and shoreline protection systems.
  • Proficiency in structural analysis and design software SAP2000, STAAD.Pro or LARSA.
  • Strong understanding of materials used in marine environments (steel, concrete, timber, composites).
  • Experience in wave, current and load modeling for marine structures.

Responsibilities

  • Provide SME input for design of marine infrastructure projects and supervise structural calculations, drawings and specs.
  • Lead and review project work across planning, design, construction and maintenance phases.
  • Support business development through proposal writing and client presentations.
  • Mentor junior engineers and promote technical growth.
  • Engage with clients and stakeholders to present design concepts and project updates.

Principal Marine Structural Engineer
Overview

Geosyntec has an exciting opportunity for a Principal Marine Structural Engineer to assist in growing our Waterfront Improvement practice, based in our Seattle, WA; Sacramento, CA; Santa Barbara, CA; Los Angeles, CA; San Diego, CA offices or any of our other U.S. based offices. The opportunity to work a hybrid schedule or remotely from your home office may be available at the discretion of the Company. The ideal candidate should have 10+ years of experience developing complex and innovative coastal engineering solutions. The preferred candidate will assimilate into our Coastal Engineering and Waterfront Development teams nationwide to provide engineering and client support on complex projects.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Provide subject matter expertise for structural design and engineering of marine infrastructure projects such as bulkheads, wharfs, bridge pilings, harbors, docks, breakwaters, and shoreline protection systems.
  • Conduct structural analysis, modeling, and design of marine and waterfront structures to ensure stability, safety, and compliance with regulatory standards.
  • Support project teams with technical input during all project phases, including planning, design, construction, and maintenance.
  • Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams to develop innovative and sustainable solutions tailored to client needs.
  • Assist in preparing technical proposals, cost estimates, and project schedules to support business development efforts.
  • Lead and review structural calculations, technical drawings, and specifications to maintain quality standards.
  • Mentor and train junior engineers, fostering technical growth and professional development.
  • Stay updated on advancements in marine engineering practices, tools, and technologies, integrating best practices into project work.
  • Engage with clients and stakeholders to present design concepts, technical reports, and project updates.
  • Drive personal, company, and rental vehicles to client or company project or office sites, and other business locations, as needed.
  • Work 30-50% overnight travel.
Education and Licensure
  • Bachelor's degree in civil, structural, marine engineering, or related field (required).
  • Advanced degree (preferred).
  • Professional Engineer license (required).
  • Structural Engineering (SE) license (preferred).
Skills, Experience and Qualifications
  • At least 10 years (15+ years preferred) of direct engineering experience in marine structural engineering, with emphasis on projects such as bulkheads, docks, harbors, and shoreline protection systems or equivalent combination of education and experience (required).
  • Proficiency in structural analysis and design software, such as SAP2000, STAAD.Pro, or LARSA (required).
  • Strong understanding of materials used in marine environments, including steel, concrete, timber, and composites (required).
  • Experience in wave, current, and load modeling as applied to marine structures (required).
  • Proven ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously and collaborate with cross-functional teams (required).
  • Business development acumen, with experience supporting proposal writing, client presentations, and project bids (preferred).
  • Regular field work and overnight travel (required).
  • Current OSHA 40‑hr HAZWOPER training and refreshers (preferred).
  • Health & Safety training, medical monitoring, and client‑driven drug and background testing may be required.
  • Valid U.S. driver's license and a satisfactory driving record for business travel (required).
Salary & Benefits

Compensation ranges (subject to change):

  • Minimum Salary: $149,330 per year; Maximum Salary: $259,690 per year (Seattle, WA; Sacramento, CA; Santa Barbara, CA; San Diego, CA).
  • Minimum Salary: $156,115 per year; Maximum Salary: $271,495 per year (Los Angeles, CA).

Benefits: 9 paid holidays, 2 floating holidays, minimum 8 sick days, minimum 11 vacation days per year; medical, dental, vision, life, disability insurance, 401(k), and other benefits per policy.
