Job summary

Redwood Software seeks a Software Engineer – Principal to extend Redwood RunMyJobs onto IBM z/OS with a Java agent, enabling large-scale mainframe automation. You will work on wire protocols, cryptography, and JES/TSO/RACF/SMF/USS integration, delivering robust, secure connectivity across systems.

You will contribute to architecture, participate in reviews, and guide implementation from design to release in an agile environment. Strong Java, C, and z/OS experience are essential.

Qualifications

• 10+ years of professional software engineering experience with strong Java 8+ skills and IBM z/OS experience is a plus.
• Hands-on z/OS systems integration experience including JES2/JES3, TSO, RACF/ACF2/Top Secret, SMF, and USS.
• Strong working proficiency in C and low-level network protocol experience.
• Experience implementing cryptographic primitives via standard libraries (Java JCE).
• Strong concurrency and multithreading skills; building resilient daemon processes.
• Experience with DevOps: Git, CI/CD, Docker, Kubernetes.
• Fluency with AI tools in production engineering environments.

Responsibilities

• Design, develop, test, and maintain native software for connectivity with IBM z/OS mainframe environments.
• Build integrations with core mainframe technologies (JES2/JES3, TSO, SMF, RACF, USS).
• Extend Redwood RunMyJobs onto IBM z/OS through a Java agent with clean extension points.
• Ensure security and per-user authorization within identity/credential management.
• Tackle system-level issues across mainframe, Unix, and Java environments.
• Collaborate with product managers and engineers to translate requirements into technical solutions.
• Participate in architecture discussions, code reviews, testing, and release planning.
• Leverage AI to accelerate codec, testing, and documentation work, validating against IBM references.
• Document protocols, security models, and platform prerequisites for field teams.
• Contribute to team success with clear communication and accountable ownership.
