Job summary

Lumicity is seeking a hands-on Principal FPGA Engineer in the United States for a medical device platform. You will lead FPGA firmware and embedded software development across the full lifecycle, from architecture to production release, within a small, multidisciplinary team.

Responsibilities include designing FPGA architectures, implementing in VHDL/Verilog/SystemVerilog, translating needs into specs, and creating robust verification and risk-management documentation.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Computer Science, Software Engineering, or related field.
  • 4+ years of experience developing firmware or software for medical devices or other highly regulated products.
  • Strong experience with FPGA architecture, development, testing, and implementation.
  • Proficiency with VHDL, Verilog, and SystemVerilog.
  • Experience developing embedded systems that interact directly with hardware.
  • Experience supporting medical devices through design controls, verification, validation, and product release.
  • Familiarity with IEC 62304, IEC 60601, FDA Quality System requirements, and international medical device regulation.
  • Understanding of software risk management, cybersecurity, version control, code reviews, static analysis, unit testing, and system test.
  • Experience with signal processing, algorithm implementation, or hardware-based optimization.
  • Strong technical documentation, problem-solving, communication, and organizational skills.
  • Ability to operate independently while collaborating within a small, fast-moving team.

Responsibilities

  • Lead the architecture, design, and development of FPGA firmware and embedded software for regulated medical device.
  • Develop and maintain code using VHDL, Verilog, and SystemVerilog.
  • Translate user and system needs into technical requirements and design specifications.
  • Implement signal-processing algorithms, device drivers, hardware interfaces, and control functionality.
  • Develop prototypes and proof-of-concept systems using FPGAs and system-on-module platforms.
  • Optimize code and algorithms based on hardware, performance, and system constraints.
  • Create design documentation, test protocols, verification reports, release notes, and risk-management documentation.
  • Perform laboratory testing, system integration, debugging, verification, and validation.
  • Support design controls and software development processes in accordance with applicable medical device standards.
  • Collaborate with software, electrical, systems, clinical, quality, and product teams.
  • Support firmware updates, product enhancements, compliance testing, and production release activities.
  • Contribute to development tools, procedures, work instructions, and technical best practices.
  • Manage development activities within an Agile environment.
  • Travel occasionally, up to approximately 1%.
