Job summary

PG&E in Northern and Central California seeks an Executive Communications Principal to lead external executive communications for the CEO and EVP of Energy Delivery. Qualifications

Responsibilities

  • Develop a strategic plan to support the CEO and EVP of Energy Delivery in alignment with business partners.

  • Produce content including briefing documents, social content, and press materials.
  • Develop media relationships and respond to inquiries; counsel leadership on issues.
  • Collaborate with PG&E leadership and internal teams to align messaging.

Department Overview

PG&E's Marketing and Communications function shapes how PG&E communicates with the people it serves in Northern and Central California and the company's workforce. The function's responsibilities include keeping customers, coworkers and others informed about PG&E's progress in delivering safe, reliable energy; ways the company is helping customers save money on their bills; and how PG&E is harnessing innovation to achieve its bold climate goals. Additionally, the function drives marketing efforts to encourage customer participation in programs that promote energy efficiency, provide income-qualified bill discounts, and support electric vehicle owners, among others.

Position Summary

We are seeking a highly motivated communications professional to join our team in leading and executing external executive communications, primarily for the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Pacific Gas and Electric Company and Executive Vice President (EVP) of Energy Delivery.

The Executive Communications Principal will be responsible for planning, delivery and measurement of communications programs, including press, social media, owned content, public speaking and related activities.

The successful candidate's work will support company goals of building trust in PG&E, and securing favorable media, social media engagement, and related metrics. Your work will educate and inform a broad range of stakeholders including the general public, media, elected officials, regulators, and coworkers.

This role will require strong collaboration and consultation with the CEO's Chief of Staff, and with an array of leaders and coworkers across the organization.

Additionally, you will utilize your expertise as a communicator to facilitate and build strong cooperative relationships with others to help guide key decisions within the company, and to package and present information accurately and at times to advocate for positions with critical internal/external audiences.

The position is hybrid working from your remote office and in person at your assigned headquarters location based on business needs. The assigned headquarters can be either in Oakland or Sacramento based on mutual agreement with the hiring manager and successful candidate.

The position will require travel at least 25% of the time. You must also be willing and able to serve in an on-call capacity as part of an emergency response team, including nights, weekends and holidays.

Job Responsibilities
  • Develop a strategic communications plan to support and advance the platform of the CEO and EVP of Energy Delivery in alignment with key business and communications partners.
  • Develop messaging for communications with external audiences.
  • Create original content, including executive briefing documents, talking points, social media content, news releases, internet content, etc.
  • Develop and maintain relationships with media and develop responses for and respond to media inquiries.
  • Maintain relationships and provide counsel to PG&E's functional business areas and other internal/external leaders on how to address and resolve key issues.
  • Partner with various PG&E leadership levels, functional business areas, and external leaders to remain current on challenges and opportunities affecting the company and coworkers.
  • Coordinate with wider Customer & Corporate Affairs team to ensure consistency and pacing of communications.
  • Partner closely with the Chief of Staff to the CEO and EVP of Energy Delivery to ensure alignment of internal and external messaging.
  • Measure effectiveness of communications tactics.
Qualifications
Minimum
  • Bachelor's degree in communications, journalism, English, advertising, marketing, public relations, or related discipline or equivalent work experience.
  • 10 years of related experience in corporate communications, executive communications, journalism, or politics.
  • Demonstrated ability to serve as a trusted advisor to senior executives, providing strategic counsel in high-visibility, fast-moving, and highly sensitive environments.
  • Demonstrated ability to translate complex business, policy, and operational issues into clear, concise, and compelling communications for diverse audiences including narratives, executive remarks, keynote speeches, briefing materials, talking points, and other leadership communications.
  • Demonstrated storytelling ability across print, video, digital, and social platforms, with sound judgment about audience, tone, and reputational impact.
  • Experience engaging directly with media and preparing executives for interviews, high-stakes inquiries, and public-facing communications.
  • Experience leading communications across multiple channels, including web, print, video, live events, and executive forums, with the ability to align messaging across platforms.
  • Executive presence, sound judgment, and the ability to navigate ambiguity, competing priorities, and rapidly changing circumstances with confidence and discretion.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office tools.
  • Valid driver's license and ability to travel as needed.
Desired
  • Experience leading executive communications, crisis communications, issues management, or other high-stakes communications in complex, high-profile environments.
  • Experience in energy, utility, public affairs, or other highly regulated sectors, with an understanding of complex stakeholders and reputational dynamics.
Compensation

PG&E is providing the full salary/pay range for this position. The actual amount paid to an individual will be based on multiple factors, including, but not limited to, internal equity,specific skills, education, licenses or certifications, experience, market value, and geographic location. The range to reasonably expect will be around the minimum and the midpoint of the range. The final decision will be made on a case-by-case basis related to the factors above.This job is also eligible to participate in PG&E's discretionary incentive compensation programs.
