The Principal Electrical Engineer – Medium Voltage (MV) serves as the senior technical authority for the electrical architecture, design governance, validation strategy, industrialization, and lifecycle support of medium-voltage power distribution products and systems (1kV–38kV). This role provides cross-program technical leadership, establishes engineering standards and design practices, resolves complex technical risks, and guides product decisions from concept through production release. The Principal Engineer works closely with customers, global engineering teams, manufacturing, quality, sourcing, regulatory, suppliers, and field support organizations to ensure solutions meet customer requirements, manufacturing capabilities, safety expectations, quality objectives, cost targets, and Jabil product lifecycle processes.

Key Responsibilities
  • Own and govern the electrical architecture strategy for MV switchgear, substations, transformers, feeder systems, and power distribution equipment across assigned platforms or product families.
  • Translate customer, regulatory, manufacturing, and lifecycle requirements into scalable engineering specifications, design rules, technical roadmaps, and release deliverables.
  • Lead system-level electrical architecture decisions for protection systems, control systems, metering, power monitoring, communication networks, and power distribution schemes in alignment with product and customer requirements.
  • Author, review, and approve protection and coordination philosophies, relay setting requirements, arc-flash mitigation strategies, grounding approaches, insulation coordination strategies, BIL requirements, and system selectivity objectives to ensure personnel safety, equipment protection, and system reliability.
  • Provide technical direction for the selection and specification of MV circuit breakers, vacuum interrupters, bus systems, protection relays, instrument transformers, surge arresters, grounding equipment, and associated power distribution components.
  • Establish communication architecture guidelines utilizing protocols such as IEC 61850, Modbus RTU/TCP, DNP3, Ethernet/IP, and other customer-required industrial communication standards.
  • Define, review, and approve short-circuit, coordination, arc-flash, load-flow, grounding, and protection studies to ensure compliance, protection performance, and system reliability.
  • Guide concept development, prototype builds, design verification, pilot production, production release, and post-launch engineering support activities across multiple programs.
  • Drive critical engineering decisions that optimize product cost, performance, manufacturability, schedule, quality, reliability, serviceability, and safety.
  • Establish design transfer expectations, support manufacturing readiness reviews, resolve production ramp issues, and guide engineering change implementation across global manufacturing sites.
  • Ensure compliance with applicable standards and requirements including IEEE C37 series, ANSI C37, IEC 62271 series, NEC, NFPA 70E, NETA, UL requirements where applicable, utility requirements, and customer-specific specifications.
  • Serve as the senior MV electrical engineering representative for customer technical reviews, architecture discussions, issue resolution, and product development decisions.
  • Lead Design for Manufacturing (DFM), Design for Test (DFT), Design for Reliability (DFR), Design for Serviceability (DFS), and Value Analysis/Value Engineering (VAVE) initiatives.
  • Define and oversee electrical validation and qualification strategies including dielectric testing, lightning impulse testing, BIL verification, temperature-rise testing, short-circuit testing, relay protection verification, controls validation, FAT, SAT, and arc-flash evaluations.
  • Provide expert support for commissioning, field troubleshooting, corrective actions, and complex field issue resolution activities.
  • Lead high-impact technical risk reviews, root‑cause investigations, corrective actions, design governance reviews, and continuous improvement initiatives.
  • Mentor engineers, review technical deliverables, and develop reusable standards, design guides, checklists, templates, and best practices for MV electrical engineering execution.
  • Collaborate with global engineering, manufacturing, sourcing, quality, regulatory, suppliers, and customer teams to align technical decisions with business and program objectives.
