Job summary

Stanley Black & Decker is seeking a Principal Engineer – Hardware BMS to join our Tools & Outdoor team in Towson, MD as a hybrid employee. You will design and develop electronic hardware for Battery Management Systems in a high-volume environment, leading cross‑functional teams across engineering, manufacturing, quality and purchasing.

You will bring a strong background in electronics, embedded systems and Li‑ion BMS, with PCB/EMC expertise, Altium design, and hands‑on fault‑tolerant

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical or Electronics Engineering.
  • 10+ years in Battery Management Systems electronics design.
  • Experience in embedded systems and Li-ion BMS.
  • Strong PCB design and EMC knowledge; Altium-based design.
  • Hands-on board bring-up with test equipment; global travel ability.

Responsibilities

  • Collaborate with marketing, engineering, manufacturing, quality, and purchasing to drive platform designs.
  • Research and develop hardware designs for Battery Management Systems.
  • Direct the design of new products and platforms and improve production techniques.
  • Set deliverables, timelines, and report status to leaders.
  • Identify and communicate major technical and schedule issues clearly.
  • Work with suppliers and cross-functional product development teams.

The Job:

As Principal Engineer– Hardware BMS, you’ll be part of our Tools & Outdoor team and will be working as a Hybrid employee. You are an experienced Electrical Engineer with hands‑on experience in electronics and motor control design in a high-volume, competitive product setting. You have demonstrated the ability to design, deliver, and thrive in a fast-paced product development environment. You are seeking a role where you can make an immediate and lasting impact on products and their end users.

You’ll get to:

  • Work closely with the Global Marketing, Engineering, Manufacturing, Quality and Purchasing teams to drive platform designs that support product portfolios across multiple strategic business units.
  • Responsible for research and development of electronic hardware designs for Battery Management Systems (BMS), delivering concurrent product development projects with a high degree of technical complexity and challenges.
  • Directs team design of new products and platforms, modify existing designs, improve production techniques, and develop test procedures.
  • Set deliverables, project timelines, and report status to team leaders.
  • Effectively identify and communicate major technical and schedule issues to team leaders in a clear, concise, and timely manner while driving appropriate actions.
  • Work with suppliers and serve as a member of cross‑functional product development teams.

You also have:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical or Electronics Engineering a minimum.
  • 10+ years of experience in Battery Management Systems Electronics design.
  • A broad range of experience with a background in electronics design.
  • Experience in embedded systems and Lithium‑ion battery management.
  • Strong knowledge of PCB design best practices and design for EMC.
  • Proficiently in schematic capture, PCB and simulation using Altium designer or similar software package.
  • Understanding of electronics manufacturing and design for high volume production and fault tolerant design practices.
  • Board‑level bring‑up and troubleshooting hands‑on experience: oscilloscope, voltage and current probes, DMM, thermal camera, and equivalent equipment.
  • Ability to travel globally as needed.
  • Excellent verbal, written, and presentation skills.

The Salary range for this position is $110,600.00 - $178,000.00 This is the lowest to highest annual full‑time salary range we would pay for this role at the time of this posting. The salary offered within the range may vary depending on multiple factors including job level, geographic location, job‑related knowledge, skills, qualifications, experience and in compliance with local wage requirements.
