Job summary

Microchip Technology Inc. is seeking a Communications Systems Design Engineer to lead the physical layer design for low power Wi‑Fi, Bluetooth, and Sub‑GHz wireless products in Irvine.

You will work with RF/Analog, Digital, Validation and Software teams to develop and test chip‑level algorithms and system models. The role requires a strong background in communication theory, signal processing, and hands‑on experience with MATLAB/C++.

Qualifications

  • Master's or PhD in Electrical Engineering with 8+ years of wireless PHY experience.
  • Strong background in signal processing and communication theory.
  • Experience in MATLAB, C/C++ and fixed‑point/cycle‑true programming and simulation.
  • Experience in IC design, RFIC calibration and testing.

Responsibilities

  • Collaborate with RF/Analog, Digital, Validation and Software teams for bring‑up, testing and troubleshooting of test chips and SoCs.
  • Simulate communication systems and contribute to digital block design.
  • Design and simulate physical layer algorithms for wireless systems.
  • Develop system models for performance evaluation and design trade‑offs.
  • Document design/test plans and work with cross‑functional teams to bring up systems in lab.
  • Test and debug communication systems and verify performance.

Job Description

Job Role

We are seeking a Communications Systems Design Engineer with a strong background in communication theory and signal processing. The successful candidate will join our Wireless Systems Group in Irvine and as a senior member of the team, will be responsible for the systems design and implementation of physical layer algorithms for low power Wi‑Fi, Bluetooth and Sub‑GHz wireless products. You will be working with a cross‑functional global team in a collaborative environment that we take pride in. You will thrive on complex technical challenges and be personally motivated to provide the best solution to challenging problems.

Responsibilities
  • Working closely with RF/Analog, Digital, Validation and Software teams for bringing‑up, testing and troubleshooting of test chips and SOC’s
  • Simulate communication systems and participate in digital block design
  • Participate in RFIP design regarding block specs & controls
  • Design and simulation of the physical layer of wireless communication systems
  • Development of system models for performance evaluation, optimization and to guide design trade‑offs
  • Working with the RF/Analog design team to develop module specifications
  • Working with the digital design team to implement algorithms and digital modules
  • Working with RF/Analog, digital and validation teams to bring‑up, test and trouble‑shoot test chips and SoC’s
  • Documentation and development of design and test plans
  • Bring up communication systems in lab
  • Test and debug communication systems
  • Perform other duties as assigned
Requirements/Qualifications
  • Master's or PhD in Electrical Engineering with 8+ years of relevant experience in wireless PHY systems design and implementation.
  • Strong background in signal processing and communication theory
  • Experience in MATLAB, C/C++ and fixed‑point/cycle‑true programming and simulation
  • Experience on Modem and digital front-end blocks design
  • Experience in IC design, RFIC calibration and testing
  • Experience in Wi‑Fi or Bluetooth PHY layer standard is a great advantage
  • A team player; able to identify and resolve technical and schedule issues with team members. Team management skills would be an advantage.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills with the ability to present technical materials effectively and produce good quality engineering documentation.

The annual base salary range for this position, which could be performed in the US, is $75,000-$232,000.*

  • Range is dependent on numerous factors including job location, skills and experience.
